A revised lower estimate of ozone columns during Earth's oxygenated history

G. J. Cooke et al.

Summary: The history of molecular oxygen in Earth's atmosphere is still debated. Using a three-dimensional chemistry-climate model, this study simulated changes in ozone levels and their implications for surface habitability and glaciation during the Mesoproterozoic. The findings suggest important implications for assessing paleoclimates and habitability of distant worlds.

Dynamics of the Great Oxidation Event from a 3D photochemical-climate model

Adam Yassin Jaziri et al.

Summary: The Earth's atmosphere underwent a major shift from anoxic to oxic conditions during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) around 2.4 to 2.1 billion years ago. This study uses a 3D photochemical-climate model to investigate the possible impact of atmospheric circulation and the coupling between climate and oxidation dynamics. The results show that diurnal, seasonal, and transport variations do not significantly affect the oxidation process. The study also suggests that cooling during the late Archean and Huronian glaciations may have played a role in the oxygenation process. Additionally, the study proposes that the oxygen overshoot after the GOE may have been accompanied by a methane overshoot, which could have had climatic consequences and influenced the dynamics of the Huronian glaciations.

Triple oxygen isotope constraints on atmospheric O2 and biological productivity during the mid-Proterozoic

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Reconstructing the history of biological productivity and atmospheric oxygen partial pressure is crucial in geobiology. The mass-independent fractionation of oxygen isotopes has been used to estimate pO(2) and productivity during the Proterozoic era. However, recent reanalysis of sedimentary sulfates from the 1.4-Ga Sibley Formation suggests that previous estimates of pO(2) levels during that time may be unreliable.
