Investigation of Biocompatible PEO Coating Growth on cp-Ti with In Situ Spectroscopic Methods

Veta Aubakirova et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pulsed bipolar PEO process of cp-Ti under voltage control to optimize properties for biocompatible coatings, determining the optimal treatment time of 2 minutes for a PEO coating with desired characteristics. Spectral diagnostics and in situ methods were used to analyze the coating formation processes and ensure precise manufacturing of implantable devices.

Biodegradation behaviour of Fe-based alloys in Hanks' Balanced Salt Solutions: Part I. material characterisation and corrosion testing

Christabelle Tonna et al.

Summary: Research on Fe-based biodegradable alloys for implant applications has significantly increased in the past decade. However, there is limited information on the influence of testing electrolytes on corrosion product formation and general corrosion progress. In this study, different testing methods were used to investigate the effect of Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) with or without Ca2+ on the corrosion behavior of powder-processed coupons made of Fe, Fe35Mn, and (Fe35Mn)5Ag.

Low voltage environmentally friendly plasma electrolytic oxidation process for titanium alloys

Fengyan Hou et al.

Summary: We report an environmentally friendly PEO process that uses nitrogen-containing electrolytes and low voltages to form uniform, adherent and porous oxide coatings on titanium alloy surfaces. The coatings primarily consist of titanium oxides and silicates. Nitrogen-based compounds improve the hardness of the oxide layers but may reduce the corrosion resistance of the coatings.

Investigation of MAO Coatings Characteristics on Titanium Products Obtained by EBM Method Using Additive Manufacturing

Sergey Grigoriev et al.

Summary: In this study, coatings with a thickness ranging from 27 to 62 micrometers were formed on electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V through micro-arc oxidation (MAO). It was found that the current density and treatment time had significant effects on the coating thickness and surface roughness, with an increase in values as the current density increased. After thermal cycling tests, the coatings formed in 30 minutes at a current density of 20 A/dm² exhibited the best surface morphology, thickness, and roughness.

Kinetics and mechanism of corrosion of oxide coating fabricated on aluminum alloy by the plasma electrolytic oxidation in molten salt

Alexander Sobolev et al.

Summary: The kinetics and mechanism of degradation of oxide coatings obtained by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation method on AA1050 aluminum alloy in molten salts were studied. The influence of the corrosive medium on the morphology and phase composition of the samples was investigated, as well as the effect of oxygen and chloride ion concentrations on the corrosion rate. It was demonstrated that samples with oxide coatings showed polarization resistance three orders of magnitude greater than the untreated alloy, and a proposed corrosion mechanism was discussed.

Hydroxyapatite Coating on Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation in Salt-Based Electrolyte

Avital Schwartz et al.

Summary: Titanium alloys have good biocompatibility and mechanical properties, making them suitable for dental and orthopedic implants. Improving their osseointegration with human bones can be achieved by developing hydroxyapatite (HA) on the treating surface using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method in molten salt. In this study, a coating of titanium oxide-containing HA nanoparticles was formed on Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by PEO in molten salt, and hydrothermal treatment was applied to form HA crystals. The effect of current and voltage frequency on the coating's morphology, chemical, and phase composition was studied.

Microstructural and Corrosion Properties of Hydroxyapatite Containing PEO Coating Produced on AZ31 Mg Alloy

Luca Pezzato et al.

Summary: By optimizing the composition of the electrolyte and process parameters, hydroxyapatite was successfully formed on the surface of AZ31 alloy for bioabsorbable implants. Compared to traditional PEO treatment, the coating produced on the PEO-BIO sample was thicker, more porous, and had zones enriched in Ca and P. The corrosion resistance of the PEO-BIO sample was comparable with traditional PEO treatment and higher than the untreated alloy.

Influence of Process Parameters on the Tribological Behavior of PEO Coatings on CP-Titanium 4+Alloys for Biomedical Applications

Stephan Lederer et al.

Summary: Wear resistant ceramic coatings were successfully generated on novel commercially pure titanium grade 4+ alloys using the plasma electrolytic oxidation technique. The coatings were characterized and it was found that the main factors affecting the generation of wear resistant coatings are current density and repetition rate. Increasing current density and frequency helps to improve the tribological properties of the coatings.
