Electrospun short nanofibers to improve damage resistance of carbon fiber composites

Usaid Ahmed Shakil et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of electrospun nylon 6 short nanofiber addition on the damage resistance of carbon fiber/epoxy composites. The results showed improvement in peak force, displacement, and elastic toughness at the optimum nanofiber concentration, as well as a reduction in delaminated area. The addition of nanofibers also suppressed compressive fiber failure and enhanced interlaminar bonding, leading to superior performance.

Resin-Rich Volumes (RRV) and the Performance of Fibre-Reinforced Composites: A Review

Amjed Saleh Mahmood et al.

Summary: This review examines the influence of resin-rich volumes (RRV) on the static and dynamic mechanical and physical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites. It discusses the formation, measurement, and factors contributing to RRV in composites. The majority of studies indicate a negative effect of RRV on the mechanical behavior of composite materials, which is caused by various factors.

The in situ matrix cracking behavior in cross-ply laminates under out-of-plane shear loading

Ke Yuan et al.

Summary: The in situ effect on cross-ply laminates under out-of-plane shear loading is studied using a two-dimensional RVE-based computational micromechanics method. High fidelity simulations of interface debonding and crack propagation in laminates show good consistency with experimental observation. Thinner ply laminates demonstrate higher shear strength and stronger damage resistance due to the delay effect of transverse cracking and delamination. The findings provide insights into the failure mechanism and optimization design of multi-layer composites.

A review of properties and fabrication techniques of fiber reinforced polymer nanocomposites subjected to simulated accidental ballistic impact

Usaid Ahmed Shakil et al.

Summary: Composite structures experience ballistic or high velocity impact loading during flight operations due to hail, bird, and debris strikes. The ballistic performance of materials is characterized by delamination resistance and energy absorption, with microstructural modification of the matrix being the primary method to improve composite ballistic performance. High specific surface area nanoparticles are now being used for matrix modification to induce nano-scale toughness mechanisms.

In-situ investigation of dynamic failure in [05/903]5 CFRP beams under quasi-static and low-velocity impact loadings

Mirac Onur Bozkurt et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental work on investigating the failure sequence in cross-ply CFRP beams under quasi-static and low-velocity impact loadings. Different types of damage mechanisms are identified, and the experimental crack tip speed data is suggested to be used as a benchmark for fine-tuning interlaminar damage models.

Mechanical Performance and Applications of CNTs Reinforced Polymer Composites-A Review

N. M. Nurazzi et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used in polymer composite materials due to their good thermal and electrical properties, low density, and high Young's modulus as suitable nanofillers. The unique nano-dimensions and strength of CNTs make them exceptional mechanical reinforcements for various applications, although there is still limited research on their mechanical performance in polymer composites. The potential uses of CNTs hybridized with polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers have been highlighted for future development.

Enhancement of out-of-plane mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composite by incorporating the multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Seyed Ali Mirsalehi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the out-of-plane mechanical properties of epoxy/CF composites by incorporating 0.5 and 1.0 Wt.% MWCNTs, showing that the bridging of MWCNTs contributes to the improvement of transverse mechanical properties. Tests demonstrated significant increases in tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength, secant modulus, and elongation of the nanocomposites compared to traditional laminate composites.

Influence of amine functionalized multi-walled carbonnanotubes on the mechanical properties of carbonfiber/epoxy composites

Vikas Kumar Sharma

Summary: This experimental work aims to develop an improved grade of Carbon fiber/epoxy compound material by adding small amounts of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which showed significant enhancement in mechanical properties. Results indicated that amine-functionalized MWCNTs have the potential to improve flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites. Among the different percentages tested, the 0.25% amine-functionalized MWCNTs showed the highest improvement in flexural strength and the 0.5% amine-functionalized MWCNTs showed the highest improvement in ILSS.
