The defining role of initial microstructure and processing temperature on microstructural evolution, hardness and tensile response of Al-Mg-Sc-Zr (AA5024) alloy processed by high pressure torsion

Rohit T. Mathew et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microstructural evolution, crystallographic texture, and mechanical behavior of an Al-Mg-Sc-Zr (AA5024) alloy subjected to severe plastic deformation through high pressure torsion (HPT). It was found that HPT can achieve grain refinement in the alloy, resulting in ultra-high strengths, but at the expense of ductility. Samples processed at lower temperatures exhibited higher hardness and significant mechanical strengthening, while samples processed at higher temperatures restored ductility but reduced strength.

Development of segregations in a Mg-Mn-Nd alloy during HPT processing

Paula C. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The study found that Nd readily segregates along boundaries in the early stages of severe plastic deformation of the magnesium alloy, while Mn forms nanoparticles and segregates along boundaries. As the strain increases, the hardness of the alloy rapidly increases and saturates, suggesting that the contribution of Mn to the strength of the alloy is minimal.

Developing age-hardenable Al-Zr alloy by ultra-severe plastic deformation: Significance of supersaturation, segregation and precipitation on hardening and electrical conductivity

Abbas Mohammadi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of ultra-high plastic deformation and subsequent aging to enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of Al-Zr alloys. The ultra-SPD leads to the formation of supersaturated solid solution in aluminum and the subsequent aging results in unique precipitation of AlZr precipitates at grain boundaries and coherent metastable Al3Zr precipitates within grain interiors. The combination of these microstructural features contributes to a significant increase in hardness, thermal stability, and reasonable electrical conductivity of the alloy.

Thermodynamic stabilization of nanocrystalline aluminum

Jacob Hohl et al.

Summary: Nanocrystalline metals can be stabilized by introducing preferential dopants to enhance the stability of the material's microstructure. Magnesium, lanthanum, and silicon are identified as effective dopant elements capable of promoting thermodynamic stability in aluminum's nanocrystalline regime.
