Indentation size effect: an improved mechanistic model incorporating surface undulation and indenter tip irregularity

Xiaozhen Li et al.

Summary: The indentation size effect (ISE) is observed in shallow indentation tests, resulting in an increase (NISE) or decrease (RISE) in hardness as the penetration depth decreases. The complicated origin of ISE is dependent on both strain gradient and external factors, but it is difficult to determine which factor is the source for a certain ISE phenomenon. Currently, there is a lack of mechanistic models on ISE, especially for RISE. This study critically reviewed several mechanistic models on ISE, focused on exploring RISE, and developed an analytical model considering external factors to explain NISE and RISE.

Using Nanoindentation to Characterize the Mechanical and Creep Properties of Shale: Load and Loading Strain Rate Effects

Jianfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the mechanical and creep properties of shale at the microscale through nanoindentation tests and evaluated their dependence on the indentation test parameters. The study found that the mechanical parameters of shale were strongly influenced by the indentation load, while the loading strain rate had a smaller impact. Furthermore, the study showed that increasing the load or decreasing the loading strain rate can increase creep deformation in shale.

Review on lifetime predictions of polyethylene pipes: Limitations and trends

Sixi Zha et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the failure mechanisms of underground polyethylene (PE) pipes and reviews the research on lifetime prediction methods from mechanical and chemical aspects. The paper highlights the limitations in current prediction methods and discusses potential trends in lifetime prediction of PE pipes, proposing a chemo-mechanically coupled model and crack layer (CL) model to reduce empiricism.

Enhancing creep resistance of aged Fe-Cr-Ni medium-entropy alloy via nano-sized Cu-rich and NbC precipitates investigated by nanoindentation

Jianbing Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of aging on the creep resistance of a Fe-Cr-Ni medium-entropy alloy (MEA) was investigated. The precipitate evolution in the aged MEA was analyzed, and it was found that the nano-sized Cu-rich and NbC precipitates significantly improved the creep resistance after long-term aging.

Evaluation of thin film material properties using a deep nanoindentation and ANN

Giyeol Han et al.

Summary: In this study, an inverse analysis method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to evaluate the material properties of thin film metallic glass (TFMG) via nanoindentation. By using a deeper indentation depth and employing different indenters, the proposed method can accurately identify the film properties and ensure unique solutions. The established ANN model, trained with a systematic finite element analysis (FEA) database, is experimentally validated and shows good accuracy in estimating the material properties.

Nanoindentation creep behavior of diverse microstructures in a pre-strained interstitial high-entropy alloy by high-throughput mapping

Qimeng Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a high-throughput nanoindentation approach to unveil the creep behavior of locally diverse microstructures. By conducting a case study on an interstitial high-entropy alloy, the researchers found that nanoindentation creep behavior is highly correlated with local microstructure features, and the creep mechanism gradually shifts from diffusion-mediated mode to dislocation-controlled mode.

Thermal oxidation of cross-linked PE and EPR used as insulation materials: Multi-scale correlation over a wide range of temperatures

Camille Blivet et al.

Summary: The study investigated the thermo-oxidation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and cross-linked ethylene propylene rubber (XLEPR) used as electrical insulators in cable systems. Characterisation of the aged materials and calculation of activation energies were conducted, showing correlations between oxidation products, crystallinity changes, gel content variations, and mechanical property reductions in both materials. Despite a diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effect observed in the 1 mm thick samples, the results were consistent.

Multi-scale indentation creep behavior in Fe-based amorphous/nanocrystalline coating at room temperature

Anil Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the room temperature creep behavior of Fe-based amorphous/nanocrystalline coatings synthesized via plasma spraying at different power levels. The micro- and nano-indentation tests showed that the creep resistance of the coatings was influenced by porosity, crystallinity, and the presence of mixed phases. The coatings deposited at higher power exhibited higher creep resistance, while the mixed phase demonstrated better creep resistance compared to fully amorphous phase.

Rate-dependent indentation size effect on hardness and creep behavior of a titanium metallization film on alumina substrate

Xuegang Xing et al.

Summary: Nanoindentation tests were conducted to investigate the indentation size effect and creep behavior of a titanium metallization film on alumina substrate. The hardness showed an inverse ISE below 200 nm and a normal ISE in the 200-1000 nm range. Elastic contact theory and strain gradient plasticity theory were used to interpret the trends in hardness, while LSR was found to strongly influence intrinsic hardness and characteristic length. Creep strain rate, displacement, and stress exponent showed correlations with LSR and/or penetrating depths.

Morphological characterization of semi-crystalline POM using nanoindentation

Petra Christoefl et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of crystalline zones on nanoindentation (NI) results of Polyoxymethylene (POM) and demonstrates the correlation between the mean elastic modulus from different NI experiments and macroscopic compression tests. It was found that regions at the edge of the sample have a lower elastic modulus than regions in the middle of the cross-section, which can be attributed to differences in crystallinity.

Time- and Feedback-Dependent DLO Phenomena in Oxidative Polymer Aging

Erik Linde et al.

Summary: Polymer degradation under oxidative conditions often shows spatially heterogeneous oxidation profiles, due to diffusion-limited oxidation where the oxidation rate exceeds oxygen resupply through diffusion. A new finite element model can accommodate time-dependent variables, allowing for more accurate simulations of polymer degradation with varying material properties over time.
