Study on a Damage Model and Uniaxial Compression Simulation Method of Frozen-Thawed Rock

Qiang Feng et al.

Summary: The study found that with an increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles, the elastic modulus, peak strength and wave velocity of yellow sandstones gradually decrease, while the peak strain and porosity increase. An energy evolution law with different freeze-thaw cycles was analyzed, a freeze-thaw damage model was established, and a functional relationship between mesoscopic parameters and freeze-thaw cycles was formulated.

Experimental investigation of plane shear fracture characteristics of sandstone after cyclic freeze-thaw treatments

Ri-hong Cao et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of freeze-thaw treatment on mode II fracture toughness and fracture surface morphological characteristics through experiments on sandstone specimens. The results demonstrate that freeze-thaw cycles play an important role in mode II fracture toughness, which decreases with an increase in cycles. The surface roughness of the fracture also increases with more freeze-thaw cycles.

Statistical Damage Model of Rock Based on Compaction Stage and Post-Peak Shape under Chemical-Freezing-Thawing-Loading

Bin Hu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a statistical damage model for rocks considering chemical-freezing-thawing-loading, by introducing the compaction index and post-peak correction coefficient to address the deficiency of existing statistical damage constitutive models in describing the nonlinear characteristics of the compaction stage and post-peak shape. The established model is compared with test results, and the results show that it can better describe the stress-strain law of rocks under different chemical solutions and freeze-thaw cycles.

Mechanism of shear strength deterioration of soil-rock mixture after freeze-thaw cycles

Liyun Tang et al.

Summary: The growth and melting of internal ice crystals lead to the deterioration of the shear strength of soil-rock mixture (S-RM) after freeze-thaw cycles. Through simulation and experiments, it was found that the thickness of shear band, fluctuation value of failure surface, and shear strength are related to the rock content, with the most significant changes observed at a rock content of 45%. Fractal theory was introduced to reveal the strength deterioration mechanism of S-RM.

Study on the microscopic damage evolution and dynamic fracture properties of sandstone under freeze-thaw cycles

Caoyuan Niu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that cyclic freeze-thaw has a significant impact on the dynamic fracture behavior of rocks, leading to increased porosity and crack velocity, as well as decreased crack initiation time and dynamic fracture toughness. Sandstone is susceptible to freeze-thaw weathering, with the roughness of the fracture surface indicating intergranular fracture playing a dominant role in sandstone failure.

Shear properties and pore structure characteristics of soil-rock mixture under freeze-thaw cycles

Liyun Tang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the shear strength and deformation characteristics of S-RM are influenced by the number of freeze-thaw cycles, showing varying trends as the cycles increase; NMR results indicated the fractal nature of the pores in S-RM, with changes in soil particle aggregation observed with increasing cycles.

Mechanical performances and microstructural characteristics of reactive MgO-carbonated silt subjected to freezing-thawing cycles

Guanghua Cai et al.

Summary: Reactive magnesia-carbonated silt shows better freeze-thaw durability in severely cold climate compared to Portland cement-stabilized silt, with lower mass change ratio and moisture content, higher density and strength. The strength of MgO-carbonated silt remains high after freeze-thaw cycles, showing potential for soil treatment applications.

Experimental study on the mechanical properties of grouted rock bolts subjected to sulfate attack and freeze-thaw cycling

Weili Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of freeze-thaw cycling and sulfate attack on the pull-out capacity of rock bolts. Both freeze-thaw cycling and sulfate attack were found to reduce the bearing capacity and increase deformation, causing stress relaxation in the bolts. Freeze-thaw damage played a dominant role under the combined action of sulfate attack and freeze-thaw cycling, with sulfate attack causing greater damage after a period of exposure.
