Hydrogen-assisted failure in Inconel 718 fabricated by laser powder b e d fusion: The role of solidification substructure in the embrittlement

Dong-Hyun Lee et al.

Summary: The influence of hydrogen on the mechanical behavior of Inconel 718 fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion was investigated through a series of tensile experiments. Two different post-fabrication heat treatments were tested to understand the effects on microstructure and hydrogen embrittlement. The results indicate the importance of microstructural changes and hydrogen trapping sites in influencing material behavior.

Effects of hydrogen and load frequency on the fatigue crack propagation behavior of selective laser melted Inconel 718 alloy

Zhenghong Fu et al.

Summary: The hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack propagation behavior of a selectively laser melted Inconel 718 alloy was studied under in situ electrochemical hydrogen charging, revealing that hydrogen significantly accelerates the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR), especially at lower load frequencies. The crack propagates along the boundaries of the cellular structure, leading to decreased plasticity along the crack. Hydrogen reduces the critical strain for crack propagation and results in the acceleration of FCGR. Lower load frequencies induce higher concentration fluctuations and greater penetration depth of hydrogen ahead of the crack tip, further promoting the acceleration of FCGR.

Hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning (HEDT) in a twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of hydrogen was found to decrease twin thickness and increase twin density in TWIP austenitic steel, influencing its hydrogen embrittlement behavior. This phenomenon, termed hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning, plays an important role in the twinning process of TWIP austenitic steel.

Effect of recrystallization annealing treatment on the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of equimolar CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy

Z. H. Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that grain boundaries and dislocations are key factors controlling the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of the alloy. Low temperature-short time recrystallizing annealing can increase strength but decrease hydrogen embrittlement resistance due to residual dislocations. On the other hand, high temperature-long time recrystallizing annealing alloy shows lower strength but better hydrogen embrittlement resistance due to the reduction of grain boundaries and dislocations.

Improving the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of a selective laser melted high-entropy alloy via modifying the cellular structures

Zhenghong Fu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that modifying cellular structures through controlled annealing can effectively improve the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of selective laser melting processed alloys. Annealing preserved cellular structures while reducing dislocation densities, slightly reducing strength but significantly increasing ductility and HE resistance. The delayed crack initiation and propagation were attributed to hydrogen-enhanced local plasticity with formation of nano-twins and dislocation cells in the modified structures.
