Development of Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni shape memory alloy with ultrahigh mechanical properties and large recovery strain by laser powder b e d fusion

Xiao Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effect of volumetric energy density on the properties of a Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni shape memory alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. It was found that an energy density of 90-265 J/mm3 resulted in good densification and high relative density above 99%. Increasing the energy density promoted the formation of gamma austenite and improved the mechanical properties and shape memory performance of the alloy. It was possible to fabricate the alloy with good ductility, high yield strength, ultrahigh ultimate tensile strength, and large recovery strain under a high energy density of 222-250 J/mm3. The results provide a solid foundation for the design and fabrication of novel intelligent structures.

Correlation between shape memory effect and density of annealing twin boundary in an FeMnSiCrNi alloy during special heat treatments with different parameters

Qiang Luo et al.

Summary: It remains unclear whether a negative dependence of shape memory effect exists on the density of annealing twin boundary in FeMnSi-based alloys during special heat treatments without optimal parameters. The study showed that the shape memory effect still exhibited a strong negative dependence on the annealing twin boundary density, independent of the special heat treatments. It was also observed that a positive dependence of the shape memory effect existed on the density of low angle grain boundary. There was no obvious correlation between the shape memory effect and the grain size. Larger grain size and less pre-existing martensite were beneficial for achieving larger recovery strains.
