Multi-colony calibration of barium isotopes between shallow-water coral skeletons and in-situ seawater: Implications for paleo proxies

Yu-Te Hsieha et al.

Summary: This study presents the first multicolony Ba isotope calibration from three shallow-water coral colonies and investigates the potential application of Ba isotopes in reconstructing surface water salinity variability in the Singapore Strait. The results demonstrate that Ba isotopes in coral skeletons can be used to trace water mass mixing driven by monsoon and reflect changes in regional water mass mixing.

Monthly resolved coral barium isotopes record increased riverine inputs during the South Asian summer monsoon

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: A stable Ba isotope record of a young fossil coral from the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean provides insights into environmental variability before the industrial era. The record shows seasonal variability during the South Asian summer monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, with spikes observed during the dry seasons. The study establishes a link between monsoon-driven freshening events and Ba isotope variability in coastal oceans.

Estuarine processes modify the isotope composition of dissolved riverine barium fluxes to the ocean

Luke Bridgestock et al.

Summary: Barium isotope variations can trace environmental processes, with riverine inputs being a significant source of dissolved Ba in the ocean. Estuarine processes modify the isotope composition of net riverine dissolved Ba fluxes reaching the ocean, potentially playing a key role in balancing the marine Ba isotope budget.

Stable Barium Isotope Dynamics During Estuarine Mixing

Zhimian Cao et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant barium isotope fractionation at near-zero salinities in the Yangtze and Pearl River Estuary, with conservative mixing dominating delta Ba-138(DBa) distributions beyond low salinities. This provides a modern calibration for using barium isotopes as a proxy for paleosalinity and river water inputs into the ocean.
