A historical review of sediment export-import shift in the North Branch of Changjiang Estuary

Leicheng Guo et al.

Summary: This study revisited the centennial hydro-morphodynamic evolution of the North Branch in the Changjiang Estuary and identified a shift from ebb to flood dominance. The sediment transport in the branch is mainly from rivers, but tidal flat reclamation increases sediment import, leading to channel aggradation.

Changes in suspended sediments in the Yangtze River Estuary from 1984 to 2020: Responses to basin and estuarine engineering constructions

Wei Luo et al.

Summary: The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the Yangtze River Estuary has shown an overall declining trend over the past 37 years, especially during the flood season. Different sub-regions in the estuary have responded differently to the reduced sediment discharge, with the inner estuary showing the most significant decline.

Morphological wave attenuation of the nature-based flood defense: A case study from Chongming Dongtan Shoal, China

Summary: The risk of coastal storm flooding is increasing due to global warming. The contribution of saltmarsh morphology to wave attenuation is undervalued, and a cost-benefit analysis favors the use of submerged breakwaters as an artificial NBFD solution, which promotes saltmarsh restoration.

Governmentality and sociotechnical imaginary within the conservation-development nexus: China's Great Yangtze River Protection Programme

Jichuan Sheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of sociotechnical imaginary on the conservation-development nexus through a case study of China's Great Yangtze River Protection Programme (GYRPP) from the perspective of governmentality. By analyzing literature and conducting interviews, it finds that the GYRPP utilizes techniques and practices of green governmentality to problematize and visualize the conservation-development nexus, resulting in the formation of new identities. Furthermore, the GYRPP aims to translate and coordinate ecological knowledge through the sociotechnical imaginary of ecological civilization, ultimately shaping China as a leader in sustainable development.

Landward shifts of the maximum accretion zone in the tidal reach of the Changjiang estuary following construction of the Three Gorges Dam

Xuefei Mei et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the morphological variations of the Datong-Xuliujing Reach (DXR) tidal reach of the Changjiang River. Three different morphological development phases were identified, influenced by sediment supply and regulation by the Three Gorges Dam. Sustainable management is crucial for large alluvial rivers and their tidal reaches in responding to natural and anthropogenic effects.

Responses of Hydrodynamics and Saline Water Intrusion to Typhoon Fongwong in the North Branch of the Yangtze River Estuary

Cuiping Kuang et al.

Summary: This study used a hydrodynamic and salinity transport model to investigate the effects of a historical typhoon on the hydrodynamics and saline water intrusion in the North Branch of the Yangtze River Estuary. The results showed that the typhoon increased tidal levels, enhanced flood currents, weakened ebb currents, and affected salinity distribution, which recovered to normal patterns within 3 days.

Rebound in China's coastal wetlands following conservation and restoration

Xinxin Wang et al.

Summary: The coastal zone of China has seen significant increases in population, economy, and urbanization since the early 1980s. A study analyzing Landsat images from 1984 to 2018 found a decrease in coastal wetland area between 1984 and 2011, with a substantial increase in saltmarsh area and stable tidal flat area since 2012. These findings are crucial for improving coastal wetland management and sustainability in China.

Tidal-flat reclamation aggravates potential risk from storm impacts

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that large-scale tidal-flat reclamation can increase the risk of coastal storm flooding, especially impacting flood defense design in urbanized areas. Analysis based on measurements before and after reclamation reveals that wide tidal flats provide efficient wave damping, while reclamation of these tidal flats substantially raises wave heights and escalates the flooding risk.

Marine sediment sustains the accretion of a mixed fluvial-tidal delta

Nicoletta Leonardi et al.

Summary: The Changjiang Delta tidal flats mainly receive sediment from marine and fluvial sources, with the majority coming from the estuary and ocean areas. Despite a significant decline in fluvial suspended sediment discharge, tidal flats continue to accrete. Over a decade, only a minimal portion of fluvial sediments contribute to sediment deposition on tidal flats.
