Oceanic and Atmospheric Drivers of Post-El-Nino Chlorophyll Rebound in the Equatorial Pacific

Hyung-Gyu Lim et al.

Summary: The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a strong impact on phytoplankton in the tropical Pacific. The study using the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's Earth System Model version 4.1 (ESM4.1) reveals that an increase in iron propagation from the western Pacific and post-El Nino dust-iron deposition anomalies in the eastern Pacific are the primary drivers of chlorophyll rebound.

The 2020-2021 prolonged La Nina evolution in the tropical Pacific

Summary: The evolution of sea surface temperature in the tropical Pacific during 2020-2021, specifically the second-year cooling phenomenon, lacks clear physical explanations. Observational data and numerical experiments were used to analyze the characteristics and evolution of upper-ocean thermal anomalies, highlighting the importance of subsurface thermal anomalies on sea surface temperature. The findings have significant implications for capturing the second-year cooling conditions in the tropical Pacific using coupled models.

Attribution and Predictability of Climate-Driven Variability in Global Ocean Color

Hyung-Gyu Lim et al.

Summary: Satellite ocean color missions have revealed the spatio-temporal variations in marine chlorophyll for over two decades. The study finds that seasonal cycles and climate-driven variability play significant roles in chlorophyll variations. Additionally, delayed climate effects can improve chlorophyll predictions by incorporating them into Earth system models.

Coupling ocean-atmosphere intensity determines ocean chlorophyll-induced SST change in the tropical Pacific

Feng Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of phytoplankton pigments on sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific using a hybrid coupled model (HCM). The modeling results revealed that the chlorophyll effect on SST is sensitive to the coupling intensity represented by a tunable coefficient alpha. A threshold was found around alpha = 1.01, where the sign of SST responses can change depending on the coupling intensity.
