A coupled model for phase mixing, grain damage and shear localization in the lithosphere: comparison to lab experiments

David Bercovici et al.

Summary: The occurrence of plate tectonics on Earth is rooted in lithospheric ductile weakening and shear-localization. The presence of mylonites at lithospheric shear zones provides evidence that localization is associated with reduction in mineral grain size. The interaction between mineral phases impedes normal grain growth while enhancing grain damage, leading to grain size reduction and weakening. This study presents a new model combining diffusive grain mixing, 2-D non-Newtonian flow, and two-phase grain damage to simulate shearing rock and provides insights into the formation of plate tectonic boundaries.

The Effect of Secondary-Phase Fraction on the Deformation of Olivine plus Ferropericlase Aggregates: 1. Microstructural Evolution

Harison S. Wiesman et al.

Summary: To study the microstructural evolution of polymineralic rocks, deformation experiments were performed on two-phase aggregates of olivine (Ol) + ferropericlase (Per) with varying periclase fractions (f(Per)). Single-phase samples of Ol and Per were also deformed for comparison. Analysis of the microstructural developments using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) revealed differences in grain size and crystalline texture between single- and two-phase samples. Grain size increased in single-phase samples but remained unchanged or decreased in two-phase samples, indicating the influence of phase-boundary pinning. Crystallographic preferred orientations were stronger in single-phase materials compared to two-phase materials.

A Common Diffusional Mechanism for Creep and Grain Growth in Polymineralic Rocks: Experiments

A. Okamoto et al.

Summary: This study conducted experiments on compression and grain growth of fine-grained forsterite and periclase aggregates, revealing that grain boundary pinning of the primary phase occurs through Ostwald ripening of the secondary phase. Grain growth and diffusion creep rates were both found to be limited by the same grain-boundary diffusivity. The diffusion of Si, which is the slowest diffusing species in the primary phase, is necessary for periclase ripening and diffusion creep of the aggregates. It is predicted that a single diffusivity, usually Si diffusivity, determines the rates of grain growth and diffusion creep in most rocks.

Evolution and demise of passive margins through grain mixing and damage

David Bercovici et al.

Summary: The initiation of subduction, or the sinking of cold lithospheric plates into the mantle, is a key mystery in understanding plate tectonics on Earth. The weakening of passive margins, through mechanisms such as spontaneous grain damage and mixing between mineral phases, can lead to the facilitation of passive margin collapse. Over approximately 100 million years, bands of mixing and weakening can develop in lithospheric rocks, resulting in anisotropic viscosity that is strong to lateral forces but weak to bending and sinking.

Evolution of Microstructural Properties in Sheared Iron-Rich Olivine

Chao Qi et al.

Summary: Experimental study on olivine samples with different iron contents reveals a transition in crystallographic preferred orientation and an increase in radial seismic anisotropy with increasing strain. Recrystallized grain size decreases inversely with stress and increases with increasing iron content. This research contributes to understanding the microstructural evolution in the mantle of both Earth and Mars.
