Internal structure of ultralow-velocity zones consistent with origin from a basal magma ocean

Surya Pachhai et al.

Summary: Studies reveal that ultralow-velocity zones beneath the Coral Sea exhibit stratified density increases and shear-wave velocity decreases, which may be related to remnants of Earth's early differentiation.

Slab control on the mega-sized North Pacific ultra-low velocity zone

Jiewen Li et al.

Summary: A mega-sized ULVZ has been discovered at the northern edge of the Pacific LLVP, almost double the size of a previously imaged ULVZ in the region, with half of the shear velocity reduction. It is formed by stable mantle flow converging at the LLVP edge driven by slab-debris in the lower mantle.

Quantification of Small-Scale Heterogeneity at the Core-Mantle Boundary Using Sample Entropy of SKS and SPdKS Synthetic Waveforms

Surya Pachhai et al.

Summary: Qualitative and quantitative analysis of seismic waveforms can reveal the presence of ultralow-velocity zones (ULVZs) at the core-mantle boundary region, but the mapping of ULVZs is incomplete. Researchers have explored the use of multi-scale sample entropy method to search for ULVZ structures, and found this approach to be potentially effective across a wide range of epicentral distances.

The Most Parsimonious Ultralow-Velocity Zone Distribution From Highly Anomalous SPdKS Waveforms

Michael S. Thorne et al.

Summary: This study presents a new map of lower mantle heterogeneity based on a global collection of highly anomalous SPdKS recordings, covering 56.9% of the CMB surface area. Analysis reveals potential ULVZ-like heterogeneities in up to 19.7% of the CMB region, with evidence for mega-sized ULVZs such as the Samoan ULVZ and a newly discovered ULVZ east of the Philippines. Additional evidence for the ULVZ east of the Philippines is provided through an analysis of ScP records.

A high-resolution map of Hawaiian ULVZ morphology from ScS phases

Jennifer Jenkins et al.

Summary: The study used core reflected ScS waves to create a high-resolution map of the Hawaiian ULVZ, revealing its morphology and variations. The ULVZ variations can be explained in terms of height or velocity changes, possibly reflecting varying layer thickness. The Hawaiian ULVZ is a large-scale regional feature, with the thickest region located in the west of Hawaii.

A Compositional Component to the Samoa Ultralow-Velocity Zone Revealed Through 2-and 3-D Waveform Modeling of SKS and SKKS Differential Travel-Times and Amplitudes

Justin Krier et al.

Summary: The study analyzed and modeled seismic data from the Samoa ultralow-velocity zone, finding the need for a large single ULVZ to explain the data and inferring the elastic parameters of the ULVZ. Velocity reductions are associated with the composition of the ULVZ, and geodynamic predictions for a mobile compositional ULVZ support the findings of the study.
