Simultaneous Measurements of Elastic Wave Velocity and Porosity of Epidosites Collected From the Oman Ophiolite: Implication for Low VP/VS Anomaly in the Oceanic Crust

Kumpei Nagase et al.

Summary: This study presents evidence that the low V-P/V-S in the oceanic crust is caused by epidotization. Quartz precipitation and spheroidal pores in epidosites result in the decrease in V-P/V-S.

Linking elastic and electrical properties of rocks using cross-property DEM

P. A. Cilli et al.

Summary: Combining electrical and elastic measurements can help reduce uncertainty in subsurface characterization. By using differential effective medium schemes to relate elastic and electrical properties to porosity and pore shape, the resulting expressions are independent of porosity, depending only on pore aspect ratio. Analysis of joint electrical-elastic data shows promising results for modeling clean sandstones, while clay-bearing sandstones present a more complex challenge. There is potential to extend this approach to produce additional cross-property relations.

Effects of Alteration and Cracks on the Seismic Velocity Structure of Oceanic Lithosphere Inferred From Ultrasonic Measurements of Mafic and Ultramafic Samples Collected by the Oman Drilling Project

Kohei Hatakeyama et al.

Summary: The study investigated the seismic velocity structures of the oceanic lithosphere, finding that alterations and porosity significantly affect the seismic velocity. The research estimated changes in porosity in the oceanic crust and increasing hydration in the mantle, resulting in high water content in the oceanic lithosphere, which has implications for water transport into Earth's interior.

Changes in elastic wave velocity during brittle deformation of gabbro and peridotite: Implications for oceanic Moho reflectivity

Yuya Akamatsu et al.

Summary: This study measured the elastic wave velocities of gabbro and peridotite during deformation experiments and inferred the effect of crack density on the observed velocity changes. The different behaviors of elastic wave velocities near the maximum stress in gabbro and peridotite may be attributed to the distinct characteristics of crack development.

Porous and cracked rocks elasticity: Macroscopic poroelasticity and effective media theory

Jerome Fortin et al.

Summary: Macroscopic poroelasticity and effective medium theory are two independent approaches for analyzing the impact of pores, cracks, and fluid on elastic properties. While they are complementary, they do not apply over the same range of conditions, as demonstrated by a compilation of data on dry and saturated rocks.

Summary: The study reveals that subducting topography plays a crucial role in the mode of fault slip, influencing the occurrence of large megathrust earthquakes. By using electromagnetic data, the research provides insights into the electrical structure and fluid transport mechanisms associated with subducting seamounts.
