Fault Source Model and Stress Changes of the 2021 MW 7.4 Maduo Earthquake, China, Constrained by InSAR and GPS Measurements

Shunying Hong et al.

Summary: On May 22, 2021, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Maduo, China, providing valuable information about crustal deformation of the Tibetan plateau. Using radar and GPS data, a fault model was reconstructed, revealing that the earthquake mainly occurred on a northwest-striking major fault with a dip angle of 78 degrees, as well as a minor southeast-striking fault with a dip angle of 64 degrees. This earthquake highlighted intrablock deformation in the Tibetan plateau.

Kejie Chen et al.

Summary: This study combines various measurement methods to investigate the rupture kinematics of the Madoi Earthquake that occurred in Eastern Tibet in 2021. The analysis reveals that the earthquake involved nearly pure left-lateral motion along a 170 km long rupture, lasting for 36 seconds. The slip concentration is found to be at depths of less than 15 km, with a maximum slip of 4.2 meters.

Rupture Heterogeneity and Directivity Effects in Back-Projection Analysis

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates how earthquake rupture heterogeneity and directivity affect back-projection results using synthetic earthquake models. The experiments show that back-projection can only track heterogeneous rupture processes and the amplitude of beam power depends on the spatial heterogeneity and rupture directivity. The study also provides a theoretical equation to explain the relationship between the wavelength of heterogeneity and synthetic seismogram frequency.

Supershear Rupture During the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo, China, Earthquake

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Using seismic and geodetic data, the detailed rupture characteristics of the 2021 M-w 7.4 Maduo earthquake were investigated. The results revealed that this earthquake was a supershear event, rupturing bilaterally along a 170 km fault segment. Furthermore, it was found that supershear earthquakes with simpler fault geometries have significantly smaller radiated energies.

USTClitho2.0: Updated Unified Seismic Tomography Models for Continental China Lithosphere from Joint Inversion of Body-Wave Arrival Times and Surface-Wave Dispersion Data

Summary: Xin et al. (2019) presented updated 3D velocity models (V-P and V-S) of the continental China lithosphere (USTClitho2.0) using joint inversion of body-wave arrival times and surface-wave dispersion data. The new models have higher spatial resolution and better resolve the complex tectonics of continental China. They are more accurate, fitting both body-wave arrival times and surface-wave dispersion data, and can serve as a better reference model for regional-scale tomography and geodynamic studies in continental China.

Source Process Featuring Asymmetric Rupture Velocities of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo, China, Earthquake from Teleseismic and Geodetic Data

Qi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rupture kinematics of an earthquake that occurred in the Bayan Har block in the Tibetan plateau. The results reveal that the earthquake was a bilateral rupture event with asymmetric rupture velocities. The slip distribution analysis using radar and GPS data verifies the asymmetric rupture velocities, and the moment tensor calculations align with the fault geometries and released energy distribution.

Rupture process of the 2021 M7.4 Maduo earthquake and implication for deformation mode of the Songpan-Ganzi terrane in Tibetan Plateau

Han Yue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation mode of the SongpanGanzi terrane (SGT) in central-east Tibet through the analysis of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake. The research reveals that the SGT upper crust exhibits distributed shear deformation and distinct transverse anisotropy, which are associated with folded structures. The earthquake occurred on a slow-moving fault and its occurrence is influenced by the unique tectonic setting of the SGT.

Overall subshear but locally supershear rupture of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake from high-rate GNSS waveforms and three-dimensional InSAR deformation

Mingzhe Lyu et al.

Summary: On May 21, 2021, a left-lateral earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in Maduo County, Qinghai province, China. The source kinematics of this event were estimated by analyzing the 1-Hz global navigation satellite system (GNSS) displacement waveforms, GNSS static offsets, and the three-dimensional (3D) co-seismic deformation field from the interfemmetric synthetic radar (InSAR) measurements. The results showed that the earthquake caused surface ruptures with a length of about 160 km and varying strike angles. The earthquake propagated bilaterally, with the majority of the slip occurring to the southeast of the epicenter. The slip reached a depth of approximately 6 km, and the estimated maximum slip was about 5 m. The earthquake had a total duration of about 35 seconds and a total geodetic seismic moment equivalent to a magnitude of 7.4. The analysis also revealed that the earthquake was an overall subshear but locally supershear rupture event. The ground motion caused by the supershear rupture exceeded the building code limits for bridges. The earthquake also increased the stress level of the Maqin-Maqu segment of the East Kunlun Fault and triggered an off-fault aftershock sequence at the northwest end of the earthquake rupture.

Complete three-dimensional coseismic displacements due to the 2021 Maduo earthquake in Qinghai Province, China from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 SAR images

Jihong LIU et al.

Summary: In this study, the three-dimensional coseismic displacements of the earthquake that occurred in Maduo county, Qinghai Province, China were derived using satellite remote sensing data. The results showed that the earthquake was dominated by left-lateral fault slip with a maximum horizontal displacement of up to 2.4 m. The accuracy of the displacement observations was significantly improved using specific methods. In addition, the strain model calculation revealed that the eastern and western parts of the faults experienced more significant strains.

Aftershock sequence relocation of the 2021 MS7.4 Maduo Earthquake, Qinghai, China

Weilai Wang et al.

Summary: The 2021 Qinghai Maduo M(S)7.4 earthquake was one of the strongest earthquakes in the Bayan Har block of the Tibetan Plateau in the past 30 years, filling in the gap of strong earthquakes in the eastern section of the northern block boundary. The aftershock sequence was relocated by a double difference algorithm within 8 days after the mainshock, revealing a total length of approximately 170 km with a bilateral rupture and a nearly vertical seismogenic fault with complex geometry.
