Earthquake Phase Association with Graph Neural Networks

Ian W. McBrearty et al.

Summary: Seismic phase association is vital for connecting earthquake arrival-time measurements to their causative sources. The development of deep-learning pickers has provided new opportunities for revisiting the phase association problem. We have developed a graph neural network associator that can simultaneously predict source space-time localization and discrete source-arrival association likelihoods. The method has been successfully tested on real data from the northern California seismic network.

An Earthquake Detection and Location Architecture for Continuous Seismograms: Phase Picking, Association, Location, and Matched Filter (PALM)

Yijian Zhou et al.

Summary: In this paper, we present a earthquake detection and location architecture called PALM, which can accurately detect and locate seismic events from continuous seismograms and enhance the template catalog. The effectiveness of PALM is demonstrated through experiments, showing that it achieves robust phase detection and precise picking. The PALM architecture has advantages compared to other matched-filter catalogs.

Advanced signal recognition methods applied to seismo-volcanic events from Planchon Peteroa Volcanic Complex: Deep Neural Network classifier

Veronica L. Martinez et al.

Summary: Advanced techniques in the recognition and classification of seismo-volcanic events are crucial for studying active volcanoes, especially for real time monitoring and modeling the volcanic environment dynamics. Utilizing machine learning-based automatic detection and classification techniques, particularly with the use of Deep Neural Networks, can improve the accuracy and efficiency of seismic event analysis.

Monochromatic Long-Period Seismicity Prior to the 2012 Earthquake Swarm at Little Sitkin Volcano, Alaska

Matthew M. Haney et al.

Summary: The study indicates that five distinctive long-period earthquakes observed before a months-long volcano-tectonic earthquake swarm at Little Sitkin volcano in 2012 were caused by the resonance of a tabular magma body at 15 km depth on the western side of the volcano. The magma body was estimated to have a lateral extent of 500 m and a thickness of 9 m. These earthquakes excited by a magmatic intrusion led to increased stress beneath the volcano, eventually triggering a shallow volcanic-tectonic earthquake swarm five days later.
