Unradiogenic reactive phase controls the ENd of authigenic phosphates in East Antarctic margin sediment

Layla Creac'h et al.

Summary: Determining past changes in ocean circulation on the Antarctic margin is important, but the current proxy methods are limited. This study evaluates the use of neodymium isotopes as a proxy for ocean circulation along the Wilkes Land continental rise. The results show the potential of seawater neodymium isotopes as water mass signatures, but further research is needed to develop reliable proxies for Antarctic water masses.

Environmental paleomicrobiology: using DNA preserved in aquatic sediments to its full potential

Eric Capo et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial and temporal variation in microbial diversity and function is crucial for ecological and evolutionary responses to global change. Recent advancements in molecular genetic methods have allowed for the analysis of ancient microbial DNA in sediment archives, aiding in evaluating responses of aquatic microbes in the past and predicting future biodiversity changes. Challenges, such as the limited ability to detect rare taxa and reconstruct complete genomes, remain in this rapidly developing field of paleo-genetics.

Diversity and ecology of Radiolaria in modern oceans

Tristan Biard

Summary: Radiolaria, a group of marine protists with intricate mineral skeletons, have existed for millions of years and play important roles in the biogeochemical cycles of the ocean. However, our understanding of their genetic diversity and biogeographic patterns is limited.

Reduced bacterial mortality and enhanced viral productivity during sinking in the ocean

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: Particle sinking is an important process in the ocean that affects the biogeochemical cycle and long-term preservation of carbon. The role of viruses in this process is still unclear. Experimental evidence suggests that the ecological characteristics of viruses change significantly during particle sinking, potentially enhancing the efficiency of the biological pump.

An Outlook for the Acquisition of Marine Sedimentary Ancient DNA (sedaDNA) From North Atlantic Ocean Archive Material

Caitlin A. Selway et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in studies using sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) to investigate paleo-environments. This study tested the feasibility of sedaDNA analysis on archived sediment cores from the North Atlantic. The researchers were able to recover eukaryotic sedaDNA from all samples, but emphasized the importance of best-practice sampling techniques and storage conditions to minimize contamination.

Water masses distribution offshore the Sabrina Coast (East Antarctica)

Manuel Bensi et al.

Summary: Current glacier melt rates in West Antarctica are higher than those around the East Antarctic margin. Wilkes Land is an exception, where significant retreat of Totten Glacier has been observed. Ocean dynamics strongly influence this process, which in turn is affected by the evolution of the ice caps. New oceanographic data collected from the Sabrina Coast in East Antarctica during the summer of 2017 provides insights into the water masses and morphology of the area.

Hybridisation capture allows DNA damage analysis of ancient marine eukaryotes

L. Armbrecht et al.

Summary: By using hybridisation capture techniques and bioinformatic tools, we successfully increased the relative abundance of marine eukaryote sedaDNA and established a new proxy for evaluating its authenticity. This approach opens up new avenues for studying the long-term changes and evolution of marine eukaryotes over geological timescales.

Enhancing diversity analysis by repeatedly rarefying next generation sequencing data describing microbial communities

Ellen S. Cameron et al.

Summary: Amplicon sequencing revolutionizes the study of environmental DNA samples, providing a rapid and sensitive technique for microbial community analysis. Rarefaction, while statistically controversial, remains prevalent in practice for normalizing library sizes for diversity analysis. Repeated rarefying proposed as a tool to proportionately represent all observed sequences and characterize random variation in diversity analysis.

Environmental DNA metabarcoding for monitoring metazoan biodiversity in Antarctic nearshore ecosystems

Laurence J. Clarke et al.

Summary: The study found that eDNA from water and sediment core samples are complementary sample types, with epifauna more likely to be detected in water column samples and infauna in sediment. More reference DNA sequences are needed for infauna/meiofauna to increase the proportion of sequences and number of taxa that can be identified. Developing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial dynamics of eDNA at low temperatures would aid interpretation of eDNA signals from polar environments.

Michael S. Brown et al.

Summary: The West Antarctic Peninsula is experiencing rapid warming and melting, impacting the regional marine food web. This study focused on cryptophyte diversity along the Peninsula, revealing two major taxa dominating the community. Changes in oceanographic conditions were associated with shifts in cryptophyte community composition.

Sedimentary Ancient DNA From the Subarctic North Pacific: How Sea Ice, Salinity, and Insolation Dynamics Have Shaped Diatom Composition and Richness Over the Past 20,000 Years

H. H. Zimmermann et al.

Summary: The study traced diatom composition and diversity using sedaDNA from eastern continental slope sediments off Kamchatka. Shifts of potential lineages were observed, suggesting pre-adapted ecotypes may have played a role in species success under changing environmental conditions. Sea ice diatoms detected during certain periods were in line with previous reconstructions, and a positive correlation between pennate diatom richness and sea ice proxy IP25 was noted. An increase in freshwater diatoms around 11.1 cal kyr BP was linked to terrestrial runoff and a loss of 42% of diatom sequence variants.

Decline in plankton diversity and carbon flux with reduced sea ice extent along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Yajuan Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates how interannual variability in sea-ice conditions impacts biodiversity and biological carbon fluxes in the Western Antarctic Peninsula using a 5-year DNA metabarcoding dataset. The results indicate that sea-ice extent is a dominant factor influencing eukaryotic plankton community composition, biodiversity, and net community production, with species richness and evenness decreasing with an increase in sea surface temperature. The study concludes that eukaryotic plankton diversity and carbon cycling in the Western Antarctic Peninsula are strongly linked to sea-ice conditions.

Summary: The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track long-term changes in terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Despite being widely applied, there are still knowledge gaps that require further research to ensure the reliability of sedimentary DNA signals. By synthesizing the latest literature and case studies, state-of-the-art analytical procedures and recommendations have been provided for effective sampling, extraction, amplification, quantification, and generation of DNA inventories from sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) using high-throughput sequencing technologies.
