Soil organic carbon saturation in cropland-grassland systems: Storage potential and soil quality

Thomas Guillaume et al.

Summary: The study evaluated SOC saturation and soil physical quality in permanent grasslands (PG) and croplands (CR) in western Switzerland. It found that the saturation in PG depended on the carbon accrual history, while the saturation in CR was low and influenced by the proportion of temporary grassland in the crop rotation.

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon

Katerina Georgiou et al.

Summary: This study estimates the stocks and storage capacity of mineral-associated organic carbon globally by analyzing soil profiles. The results show that the current carbon stocks in non-permafrost mineral soils account for 66% to 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, but only 42% to 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Agricultural management regions and deeper soil layers exhibit the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Soil carbon furthest from its mineralogical capacity is more effective at accruing carbon over years to decades.

Long-term soil organic carbon dynamics in temperate cropland-grassland systems

Thomas Guillaume et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 30-year investigation on soil dynamics in croplands, permanent grasslands, and mountain pastures in western Switzerland, identifying key factors influencing SOC changes. Croplands exhibited higher losses in soil organic carbon compared to permanent grasslands and mountain pastures under similar clay content.

Soil organic carbon becomes newer under warming at a permafrost site on the Tibetan Plateau

Ruiying Chang et al.

Summary: This study conducted manipulative warming experiments in permafrost areas on the Tibetan Plateau and found that increased SOC accumulation was mainly attributed to plant-derived C while old C was lost through enhanced respiration. This field-based evidence enhances our understanding of the warming-induced processes in permafrost regions.

Soil moisture-atmosphere feedback dominates land carbon uptake variability

Vincent Humphrey et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that global land carbon uptake variability is mainly driven by soil moisture, which indirectly affects photosynthesis. The soil moisture-atmosphere feedback mechanism amplifies temperature and humidity anomalies, enhancing the direct impact of soil water stress.

Regional environmental controllers influence continental scale soil carbon stocks and future carbon dynamics

Daniel Ruiz Potma Goncalves et al.

Summary: Understanding the environmental factors influencing soil organic carbon (SOC) can help predict the impact of changing conditions more accurately and reduce uncertainties in geospatial and Earth System Models. Higher precipitation and lower temperatures were associated with higher SOC stocks in most ecoregions, while land cover types were crucial in drier ecosystems.

Similar importance of edaphic and climatic factors for controlling soil organic carbon stocks of the world

Summary: The study found that climate and soil properties have similar contributions to global SOC stocks, but their importance varies in different soil depths. Individual soil properties play a more crucial role in SOC dynamics than climate, challenging the current climate-driven framework.
