Controlling factors and impacts of river-borne neodymium isotope signatures and rare earth element concentrations supplied to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago

M. Grenier et al.

Summary: Studying the factors controlling the neodymium isotopic compositions and rare earth element concentrations in rivers draining into the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) is important for understanding the distribution of these tracers in the ocean. Results show significant variations in both REE concentrations and neodymium isotopic compositions in the sampled rivers. The lithology of the watersheds and the physical and chemical characteristics of the river water play important roles in determining these variations. The riverine input may have implications for paleoceanographic reconstructions of water mass distribution in the Baffin Bay.

Modelling the Oceanic Advection of Pollutants Spilt Along with the Northwest Passage

Ran Tao et al.

Summary: The retreat of Arctic sea ice has led to increased risks of trans-Arctic ship traffic and pollutant spills. This study used numerical modeling and particle tracking to investigate the oceanic circulation pathways of pollutants in the Canadian Arctic. The results identified the eastern study area as having the largest spreading area for released particles, with most of them propagating into the North Atlantic Ocean.

Solid-phase Mn speciation in suspended particles along meltwater-influenced fjords of West Greenland

C. M. van Genuchten et al.

Summary: This study investigates the manganese cycle in high latitude coastal waters by combining in-situ dissolved manganese measurements and X-ray absorption spectroscopy data of suspended particles in four fjords of West Greenland. The results show that dissolved manganese concentrations generally decrease conservatively with increasing salinity, while dissolved iron trends decline with increasing distance from glacier outflows. The behavior of dissolved manganese in fjords with different suspended particle manganese speciation suggests that its concentration is primarily controlled by dilution of a freshwater source.

The River-Sea Transition Zone (Marginal Filter) of the Northern Dvina River as an Effective Trap of Riverine Sedimentary Matter on Its Way to the Open Area of the White Sea

V. V. Gordeev et al.

Summary: The article summarizes 20 years of research data on the river-sea transition zone of the Northern Dvina River and White Sea. It highlights the significant losses of sedimentation and biogeochemical transformation that occur as riverine sedimentary material makes its way to the open sea. The study findings reveal that only about 40% of suspended sediments, 50% of total iron, and almost 60% of total manganese reach the open areas of the sea. These volumes are crucial for the geochemical balance and ecological research in the sea.

Sediments in Sea Ice Drive the Canada Basin Surface Mn Maximum: Insights From an Arctic Mn Ocean Model

B. Rogalla et al.

Summary: Biogeochemical cycles in the Arctic Ocean are sensitive to the transport of materials from continental shelves into central basins by sea ice. Manganese (Mn) is an important micronutrient and tracer, and sea ice is the main source of Mn in the Canada Basin while rivers contribute less. The vulnerability of biogeochemical supply mechanisms in the Arctic Ocean and subpolar seas to climate change is highlighted.

Recent changes to Arctic river discharge

Dongmei Feng et al.

Summary: This study calculates daily streamflow in 486,493 pan-Arctic river reaches from 1984-2018 and reveals larger and more heterogenous total water export and water export acceleration than previously reported. Significant differences were found across basins, ecoregions, stream orders, human regulation, and permafrost regimes. The study also identified significant changes in the spring freshet and summer stream intermittency.

Glaciers and Nutrients in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago Marine System

Maya P. Bhatia et al.

Summary: The Canadian Arctic Archipelago is vulnerable to climate warming, with its glaciers impacting nutrient delivery to surface waters through upwelling and direct discharge. The strength of upwelling and nutrient delivery scales with subglacial meltwater discharge, with potential consequences for local productivity and regional micronutrient cycling. As glaciers retreat, the impacts on marine ecosystems are likely to be amplified initially but eventually muted as the ice masses diminish.
