Evidence from molecular marker and FT-ICR-MS analyses for the source and transport of dissolved black carbon under variable water discharge of a subtropical Estuary

Weiqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and dissolved organic matter (DOM) mixing experiments in the Jiulong River estuary (JRE) and found that deposition inputs from soil and atmospheric deposition play a role in estuarine dissolved black carbon (DBC). The composition and concentration of DBC were primarily controlled by mixing, but photodegradation and particle adsorption/flocculation may also contribute to its removal.

Review of the influencing factors of secondary organic aerosol formation and aging mechanism based on photochemical smog chamber simulation methods

Yujie Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, the formation and aging mechanism of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and its influencing factors have been the focus of attention due to their impact on climate change, atmospheric quality, and human health. Differences between air quality model simulation results and field observations may be attributed to currently undetected components during SOA formation and aging, as well as the interactions among multiple influencing factors. This paper provides a detailed review of the complex dynamic processes and influencing factors involved in SOA formation and aging, mainly based on photochemical smog chamber simulations. The nucleation and vapor pressure of the products were found to be the most fundamental aspects in the dynamics of the SOA formation and aging process, despite the joint influence of precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxidants (such as OH radicals), and atmospheric environmental factors.

Size distributions and dry deposition fluxes of water-soluble inorganic nitrogen in atmospheric aerosols in Xiamen Bay, China

Shui-Ping Wu et al.

Summary: The study collected size-segregated aerosol particles in a coastal urban site in Xiamen Bay, China, to examine the seasonal characteristics of aerosol and water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and dry deposition of nitrogen species. The results showed significant seasonal variations in aerosol concentrations and WSII concentrations in different particle sizes. The study also found differences in the size distribution of various inorganic ions in aerosol particles.

Fate of dissolved black carbon in the deep Pacific Ocean

Youhei Yamashita et al.

Summary: The study reveals the distribution of dissolved black carbon in the Pacific Ocean, indicating a negative correlation between its concentration and deep-ocean circulation. The removal process of black carbon to abyssal sediments is estimated to account for a small percentage of anthropogenic CO2 uptake by the ocean.

Intercomparison of equivalent black carbon (eBC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations with three-year continuous measurement in Beijing, China

Xiaomeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 3-year measurement of BC and EC in Beijing and found differences between them, which were related to BC aging process and secondary components. Seasonal specific conversion factors of eBC and EC were provided, offering reference for studies in other areas.

Multiproxy probing of anthropogenic influences on the different components of dissolved organic matter in coastal rainwater

Hongyan Bao et al.

Summary: In this study, the temporal variation and influential factors of rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) were tracked at a coastal site using dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV-vis spectra, and molecular markers. The results showed negative correlations between DOC, light absorption, and precipitation amount, as well as higher DOM concentrations in spring and in rain influenced by the land. Human emissions and secondary production played important roles in regulating the level of DOM concentration, and environmental variables confirmed the input from anthropogenic activities. Future studies should focus on how atmospheric deposition affects biogeochemical cycles in coastal regions.
