Development of a Clear-Sky 3D Sub-Grid Terrain Solar Radiative Effect Parameterization Scheme Based on the Mountain Radiation Theory

Anning Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3DSTSRE (3-dimensional sub-grid terrain solar radiative effect) parameterization scheme is developed to calculate the surface solar radiation flux based on mountain radiation theory and considering the 3-dimensional configuration of terrains. The scheme achieves equivalent results to explicit calculations without reducing the efficiency of numerical models. It performs well at different horizontal resolutions and shows potential for broad applications in numerical models.

The Wet Bias of RegCM4 Over Tibet Plateau in Summer Reduced by Adopting the 3D Sub-Grid Terrain Solar Radiative Effect Parameterization Scheme

Chunlei Gu et al.

Summary: To improve the overestimation of summer precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau by the conventional radiative transfer scheme in RegCM4, a 3-dimensional sub-grid terrain solar radiative effect scheme is implemented. The scheme significantly reduces wet bias and improves the simulation of surface energy balance. Mechanism analysis shows that reduced downward surface solar radiation weakens the surface heat source and leads to cooler near-surface air, affecting local atmospheric circulation and reducing rainfall.

Summary: This paper presents a long-term dataset of soil moisture and soil temperature (SMST) profiles collected from the Tibet-Obs observatory on the Tibetan Plateau. It analyzes the characteristics and seasonal variations of SMST at different soil depths, and compares the results with other models, revealing the limitations of current models in simulating winter conditions on the plateau.

Observed Linkage between Tibetan Plateau Soil Moisture and South Asian Summer Precipitation and the Possible Mechanism

Waheed Ullah et al.

Summary: Understanding the thermal processes of the Tibetan Plateau is crucial in studying climate change, as it impacts summer precipitation in South Asia. This study found that variations in South Asian precipitation are significantly influenced by Tibetan Plateau soil moisture, with dry soil moisture leading to increased summer precipitation in the region. Through analyzing atmospheric data, it was suggested that soil moisture levels in the Tibetan Plateau can affect the energy balance and precipitation patterns in South Asia.

Evaluation of soil thermal conductivity schemes incorporated into CLM5.0 in permafrost regions on the Tibetan Plateau

Shuhua Yang et al.

Summary: Soil thermal conductivity (STC) is an important parameter for understanding thermal changes in soil, especially in permafrost regions. Different STC schemes incorporated into land surface process models (LSMs) can lead to large errors. This study evaluated nine normalized STC schemes in simulating soil thermal regimes on the Tibetan Plateau and found that the scheme including minerals, soil organic matter, and gravel soil performed the best. The BA2005 scheme showed the best performance among the selected schemes.

Summary: The infiltrability of frozen soils is influenced by freeze-thaw and preferential flow dynamics, highlighting the significant impact of water freezing in macropores on infiltration and runoff characteristics. This study provides a physically based description linking infiltration behavior to the hydraulic and thermal properties of structured soils, demonstrating the importance of macropore hydraulic conductivity and heat exchange in controlling preferential flow dynamics in frozen soils.

Summary: This paper establishes different parameterization schemes to modify different underlying surfaces on the Tibetan Plateau and discusses the variations in soil thermal and hydraulic properties. Key thermal and hydraulic parameters affecting the performance of the schemes are analyzed based on observation data, aiming to improve the simulation ability of soil temperature and moisture in plateau areas. Summary: Soil water and heat transfer modeling in high-altitude cold regions is complex, and this study conducted sensitivity tests and combination experiments using CLM5.0 to improve simulation performance. The SP7 experiment showed the best performances in simulating soil water and heat transfer on the Tibetan Plateau, especially in reducing bias and improving the simulation of soil freezing-thawing processes. Compared to the default simulation, SP7 significantly reduced biases and improved correlation coefficients for soil moisture and temperature.

Gravel Parameterization Schemes and its Regional Assessment on Tibetan Plateau Using RegCM4

Yigang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of gravel in a regional climate model was considered and evaluated. The addition of gravel in the simulation generally improved the model performance in simulating soil moisture, especially in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. However, there is still room for improvement in simulating temporal variations of soil moisture at depths below 1.0 meters. The study also found that increasing gravel content may affect soil saturation conductivity and soil moisture content.

Shortened duration and reduced area of frozen soil in the Northern Hemisphere

Summary: The study found significant changes in soil freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) across the Northern Hemisphere over the past 40 years, primarily due to delays in frozen soil onset and advancements in thawing. Furthermore, it highlighted that near-surface air temperature and snowpack are the main driving factors of spatiotemporal variations in soil FTCs, with more drastic changes observed in Eurasia compared to North America.
