Temporal variations of soil NO and NO2 fluxes in two typical subtropical forests receiving contrasting rates of N deposition

Piaopiao Ke et al.

Summary: Soils in subtropical forests in South China were found to have significant emissions of NO, which could be attributed to high nitrogen deposition. Soil temperature and water filled pore spaces were important factors regulating NO emissions, along with ambient NO concentration and rainfall. Additionally, differences in mineral nitrogen and soil moisture conditions between sites influenced the NO emissions characteristics.

Changes in the Relative Importance of Biogenic Isoprene and Soil NOx Emissions on Ozone Concentrations in Nonattainment Areas of the United States

Jeffrey A. Geddes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relative impacts of biogenic isoprene and soil nitrogen oxide emissions on O-3 concentrations and variability. It finds that as anthropogenic NOx emissions decline, the sensitivity of O-3 to biogenic isoprene emissions decreases while the sensitivity to soil NOx emissions increases. In many areas, interannual variability in soil NOx emissions now has larger impacts on O-3 variability than isoprene emissions, which used to dominate in the recent past.

Interannual and seasonal variabilities in soil NO fluxes from a rainfed maize field in the Northeast China

Chenxia Su et al.

Summary: This study measured NO fluxes over two years from a rainfed maize field in Northeast China and found that interannual differences were largely related to weather conditions. The highest NO emissions occurred in summer after fertilizer application. Seasonal patterns of NO fluxes were mainly controlled by soil available N concentrations and soil temperatures.

Impacts of Soil NOx Emission on O3 Air Quality in Rural California

Tong Sha et al.

Summary: Nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain a key precursor in O-3 formation despite stringent controls, with soils identified as a dominant source of NOx emissions in California. The study quantified the impact of soil NOx emissions (SNOx) on air quality, showing significant effects on NO2 columns and surface O-3 concentrations in rural areas. The findings underscore the importance of limiting SNOx to improve air quality and human health.

US COVID-19 Shutdown Demonstrates Importance of Background NO2 in Inferring NOx Emissions From Satellite NO2 Observations

Zhen Qu et al.

Summary: Satellite observations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were compared with surface network measurements during the US COVID-19 shutdown, revealing a muted response in the satellite observations due to a significant background contribution to NO2. Long-term trends show an increasing NO2 background over remote US regions, potentially linked to wildfires. Understanding this background NO2 is crucial for interpreting satellite observations accurately.

The underappreciated role of agricultural soil nitrogen oxide emissions in ozone pollution regulation in North China

Summary: The study reveals that soil emissions of nitrogen oxides in the North China Plain significantly impact the sensitivity of ozone pollution to anthropogenic emissions, suggesting that additional measures beyond reducing combustion emissions are needed to effectively mitigate ozone pollution.
