Effects of Convective Mergers on the Evolution of Microphysical and Electrical Activity in a Severe Squall Line Simulated by WRF Coupled With Explicit Electrification Scheme

Jingyu Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, the severe squall line that occurred in the Beijing Metropolitan Region on July 27, 2015 was simulated and studied using the WRF model coupled with an explicit electrification lightning scheme. The model captured the evolution of the squall line, including the merging of individual cells and storms, and the simulated flash frequency was consistent with the observation. The study found that the cloud bridge was the region where lightning events increased the most, and the rapid connection and formation of new convective cells between two older storms were due to the upstream anvil and sinking outflow. The study also revealed the evolution of in-cloud charge distribution during the merger. Overall, the study supports the hypothesis that convective merger enhances lightning activity and expands our understanding of its effects on microphysics and charge redistribution.

Understanding the dynamical-microphysical-electrical processes associated with severe thunderstorms over the Beijing metropolitan region

Xiushu Qie et al.

Summary: The STORM973 project conducted comprehensive field observations of thunderstorms in Beijing metropolitan region from 2014 to 2018, finding that squall lines and multicell storms are the two major categories of severe thunderstorms. It was also discovered that lightning activity can be used as an indicator of severe weather events.

Increasing trend of lightning activity in the South Asia region

Kai Qie et al.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in lightning density in South Asia over the past 20 years, with the surface latent heat flux along the west coast of the Indian subcontinent being the main contributor. Thermodynamic effects were found to have a greater impact on lightning activity than microphysical effects in the region.

Observations and numerical simulations of the October 25th, 2015 super-cell thunderstorm over Central Israel

Yoav Yair et al.

Summary: An exceptionally rare super-cell thunderstorm occurred in the Eastern Mediterranean on the morning of October 25th, 2015, bringing intense lightning, severe hail, downbursts, and heavy rain. The storm registered more than 28,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strokes within a 4-hour period, with a peak stroke rate exceeding 500 strokes per minute.

Intraregional Comparisons of the Near-Storm Environments of Storms Dominated by Frequent Positive Versus Negative Cloud-to-Ground Flashes

A. J. Eddy et al.

Summary: By comparing 17 environmental parameters of storms dominated by +CG flashes with those of storms dominated by -CG flashes in each of seven regions spanning the contiguous United States, we found that the combination of parameters conducive to dominant +CG flash activity and, by inference, to anomalous storm charge structure varies widely from region to region. The lack of a favorable value of any particular parameter in a given region is offset by favorable values of one or more other parameters.

Lightning Enhancement in Moist Convection With Smoke-Laden Air Advected From Australian Wildfires

Y. Liu et al.

Summary: The study discovered a significant increase in lightning strokes during the 2019-2020 Australian wildfire season, with a 73% rise over land and a 270% increase over the ocean. The added aerosol intensified lightning activity in oceanic convection, leading to a noticeable positive correlation between precipitation and lightning strokes.

Aerosol effects on electrification and lightning discharges in a multicell thunderstorm simulated by the WRF-ELEC model

Mengyu Sun et al.

Summary: The effects of aerosols on lightning activity in thunderstorms are significant, with higher aerosol loading enhancing electrification and lightning discharges. Elevated aerosol concentrations increase cloud droplets, latent heat release, updraft, ice-phase particles, and charging rates, leading to more lightning. In contrast, lower aerosol concentrations result in weaker updrafts, fewer ice particles, lower charging rates, and less lightning in continental thunderstorms.
