Christmas-Related Reduction in Beta Activity in Parkinson's Disease

Lucia K. Feldmann et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of Christmas on beta activity in patients with Parkinson's disease. The results showed a significant reduction in beta activity on Christmas Eve. The study suggests that circadian and holiday-related changes should be considered when tailoring adaptive deep brain stimulation algorithms.

Excitability changes induced in the human auditory cortex by transcranial alternating current stimulation

Summary: This study demonstrates that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate the auditory cortex and inhibit the auditory steady-state response (ASSR). The findings contribute to understanding the effects of tACS on the human auditory cortex and the resulting neurophysiological changes.

State-dependent effects of neural stimulation on brain function and cognition

Claire Bradley et al.

Summary: This Review explores the effects of state-dependent variations in brain activity and behavior with brain stimulation. The authors focus on the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial electrical stimulation in studying conscious state, attention, and working memory. They discuss how these stimulation methods can reveal patterns of neuronal activity responsible for regulating behaviors and emphasize the importance of considering physiological and cognitive states for the reliability of brain stimulation interventions.

The age-related changes in 40 Hz Auditory Steady-State Response and sustained Event-Related Fields to the same amplitude-modulated tones in typically developing children: A magnetoencephalography study

Vardan Arutiunian et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that gamma-band oscillations and transient evoked potentials in children may change with age, potentially related to the maturation of the GABAergic neurotransmission system and the balance between excitation and inhibition in neural circuits. In this study, using magnetoencephalography (MEG), researchers investigated the relationship between 40 Hz auditory steady-state gamma response (ASSR) and sustained event-related field (ERF) response to the same periodic stimuli in a group of 30 typically developing children aged 7 to 12 years. The results showed a strong association between the strength of 40 Hz ASSR and the amplitude of ERF, with age-related changes observed in both responses.

Adjunctive tDCS for treatment-refractory auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia: A meta-analysis of randomized, double-blinded, sham-controlled studies

Wen-Long Jiang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a Meta-analysis on treatment-refractory auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia patients and found that active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) did not show significant advantage in improving auditory hallucinations compared to sham stimulation. However, subgroup analyses revealed that active tDCS with twice-daily stimulation or with >= 10 stimulation sessions showed a significantly better therapeutic effect in improving auditory hallucinations symptoms.

State-dependent tDCS modulation of the somatomotor network: A MEG study

Fabio Masina et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on spectral activity and functional connectivity in somatomotor regions. The results show that these effects depend on the initial state of the brain, with reductions in alpha and beta power observed only in participants with higher baseline power. The findings highlight the importance of considering state-dependency in tDCS and provide insights into potential mechanisms and individual responsiveness.

Detection of the 40 Hz auditory steady-state response with optically pumped magnetometers

Kyung-min An et al.

Summary: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive functional neuroimaging technique that detects brain magnetic field. Traditional MEG uses superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), while miniature optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have recently been developed as an alternative. The study suggests that OPM sensors have comparable performance to conventional SQUID-MEG sensors, showing the feasibility of using OPM sensors for functional neuroimaging and brain-computer interface applications.

Depression of auditory cortex excitability by transcranial alternating current stimulation

Yao Wang et al.

Summary: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that can modulate motor, cognitive, and memory function. This study found that 11-Hz tACS has an inhibitory effect on the 40-Hz auditory steady-state response (ASSR) and may enhance the activity of the middle temporal gyms while reducing the activity of the posterior cingulate gyrus.

Global and Parallel Cortical Processing Based on Auditory Gamma Oscillatory Responses in Humans

Mariko Tada et al.

Summary: Gamma oscillations can reflect perception and cognition, with the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) being a reliable index for these oscillations. The study found that ASSR is globally distributed in the temporal, parietal, and frontal cortices, showing frequency tuning differences between different brain regions. These findings could lay the groundwork for further research on patients with neuropsychiatric disorders.
