Effect of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) on Social Interaction and Quality of Life in Patients with Schizophrenia during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Experimental Study

Chieh-An Shih et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in improving social interactions and quality of life in patients with chronic schizophrenia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The experimental group received 60 minutes of AAT once a week for 12 weeks, while the control group engaged in routine discussion groups and watched short films about animals. Results showed that AAT had a positive impact on the social functioning and quality of life of patients, but did not improve social adaptive functions. AAT should be promoted as a community-based rehabilitation tool for patients with chronic schizophrenia.

Functional Outcomes in a Randomized Controlled Trial of Animal-Assisted Therapy on Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Schizophrenia

Chyi-Rong Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the efficacy of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) for middle-aged patients with schizophrenia. The results showed that the AAT group had greater improvement in chair stand test repetitions and assessment of communication and interaction skills scores compared to the control group, but there was no improvement in cognitive function, agility, or mobility.

Specific and Non-specific Factors of Animal-Assisted Interventions Considered in Research: A Systematic Review

Cora Wagner et al.

Summary: Research on animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) has seen significant growth in recent years, but the working mechanisms and importance of animals in these interventions remains unclear. A systematic review of existing studies found that most studies implicitly considered the animal or the interaction with the animal as a specific factor for the effects of AAIs. However, further research is needed to understand how and why AAIs work.

Higher brain structural heterogeneity in schizophrenia

Keke Fang et al.

Summary: As a highly heterogeneous disorder, schizophrenia shows notable interindividual variation in clinical manifestations. A study found that patients with schizophrenia exhibit higher interindividual morphological variability in the brain compared to healthy controls. These variability brain regions are associated with affective, incentive, and reward processes.

The Effect of Dog Presence on the Therapeutic Alliance: A Systematic Review

Timothy Collier et al.

Summary: The therapeutic alliance between clinician and client is a crucial predictor of treatment outcomes. The presence of a dog in therapy sessions has been explored as a potential factor to positively influence the therapeutic alliance. However, the results from existing studies are conflicting, and it is too early to recommend the use of dogs for this purpose.

Risk-of-bias VISualization (robvis): An R package and Shiny web app for visualizing risk-of-bias assessments

Luke A. McGuinness et al.

Summary: Despite the availability of numerous software options for evidence synthesis, there is currently no universal tool for generating figures to display and explore risk-of-bias assessments. However, tools such as the R programming environment and Shiny have made it easy to create new tools for producing evidence syntheses. The new tool robvis facilitates the rapid production of publication-quality risk-of-bias assessment figures and is available as an R package and web app.

Summary: Studies have shown a significant reduction of cortisol levels and cardiovascular risk factors with canine companionship. Future research is needed to explore the association between canine companionship, cortisol, and cardiovascular risk factors, particularly in lower-middle-income countries.

Therapy Dog Welfare Revisited: A Review of the Literature

Lisa Maria Glenk et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in research on human-animal interactions, contributing to a better understanding of the benefits humans derive from contact with animals. However, the experiences of animals in these interactions remain an understudied area. The welfare of dogs participating in animal-assisted interventions to improve human health is crucial, and advancements in scientific methodology are being used to assess the well-being of therapy dogs.
