Barriers and facilitators to implementation of cognitive adaptation training in long-term inpatient facilities for people diagnosed with severe mental illness: A nursing perspective

Michelle van Dam et al.

Summary: This study explores the challenges of implementing Cognitive Adaptation Training (CAT) in psychiatric care and identifies the factors influencing implementation. The results show that in addition to facilitators at the intervention and nursing levels, barriers at the organizational level need to be overcome. Future implementation initiatives should focus on providing ongoing training and supervision for CAT specialists, appointing local champions to enhance commitment among nursing staff, and involving management to address organizational barriers.

Prevalence and assessment of self-disorders in the schizophrenia spectrum: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sam Burgin et al.

Summary: Recent studies have explored self-disorders as the clinical core of the schizophrenia spectrum, but there have been few discussions on the quality and utility of the assessment tools. This study conducted a literature search and meta-analysis, finding that self-disorders are more aggregated within schizophrenia spectrum groups compared to non-schizophrenia spectrum groups, and have a greater likelihood of occurring within SSDs.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Mass Spectrometry Proteomics Applied to Human Peripheral Fluids to Assess Potential Biomarkers of Schizophrenia

Joao E. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics can effectively identify biomarkers and relevant biological pathways in schizophrenia (SCZ) patients, providing potential targets for prediction and diagnosis improvement. This study identified 217 differentially expressed proteins in SCZ patients through meta-analysis of 19 articles using MS proteomics approaches. Enriched biological pathways included lipid metabolism, complement and coagulation cascades, and immune response. The upregulation of FCN3 and downregulation of APO1, APOA2, APOC1, and APOC3 were suggested as potential biomarkers for SCZ. However, heterogeneity in the findings and confounding factors should be taken into account for future studies to enhance the understanding of differentially expressed proteins.

Beyond antipsychotics: a twenty-first century update for preclinical development of schizophrenia therapeutics

Daisy L. Spark et al.

Summary: Despite decades of drug discovery, current antipsychotics have limited efficacy in treating negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. The lack of translation between preclinical and clinical efficacy suggests a systematic failure in determining efficacy in preclinical rodent models. This review critically evaluates the current rodent models and behavioral tests used in preclinical efficacy research and proposes the use of objective, clinically informed measures to improve translational validity.

Assessment and correlates of autistic symptoms in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders measured with the PANSS Autism Severity Score: A systematic review

Gabriele Nibbio et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are considered separate entities, but there are important similarities between the two spectra. This systematic review examines the use of the PANSS Autism Score (PAUSS) in assessing autistic symptoms in people with SSD and analyzes the cognitive, functional, and neurobiological correlates of these symptoms. The results show that autistic symptoms in individuals with SSD are associated with poorer cognitive performance, particularly in the social cognition domain, and worse psychosocial functioning. However, the presence of autistic symptoms may also have a protective role on functioning in individuals with more severe psychotic symptoms. Further research on the impact of autistic symptoms could be of great scientific and clinical interest.
