Health Care Transition From Pediatric- to Adult-Focused Care in X-linked Hypophosphatemia: Expert Consensus

Kathryn Dahir et al.

Summary: XLH patients require psychosocial and access-related resources for disease education, genetic counseling, family planning, and emancipation from caregiver-directed care. Effective communication through familiar channels and teaching patients to advocate for their health care/access to specialists are essential for successful transition from pediatric- to adult-focused health care.

Oral health-related quality of life in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia: a qualitative exploration

Caroline Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the oral care pathway and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients in an expert oral medicine department in a Parisian hospital. The results showed that patients faced challenges in their oral health and overall quality of life, with a chaotic oral health care pathway and a lack of knowledge among oral health professionals about their condition. This had consequences on their social, professional, and school integration. Patients emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary team including medical and dental professionals.

Secondary Osteoporosis

Peter R. Ebeling et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a global public health problem with high prevalence rates among postmenopausal women, premenopausal women, and men. Identifying secondary causes of osteoporosis is crucial as treatment often involves addressing the underlying condition. Screening is recommended for all osteoporosis patients, with advanced investigations necessary for certain groups. The response to conventional therapy may be insufficient if the underlying condition is not recognized and treated. Bone densitometry can underestimate or overestimate fracture risk in certain chronic diseases. Tools such as FRAX and trabecular bone score provide additional information on fracture risk in secondary osteoporosis.

Factors influencing peak bone mass gain

Xiaowei Zhu et al.

Summary: Bone mass is crucial for osteoporosis and fracture risk. Factors such as race, gender, genetics, and lifestyle habits influence peak bone mass, with lifestyle factors playing a significant role in optimizing bone health and reducing osteoporosis risk in later life. Maximizing peak bone mass in adolescence and young adulthood can help reduce the risk of low bone mass or osteoporosis in the future.
