A cytokine/PTX3 prognostic index as a predictor of mortality in sepsis

Summary: This study evaluated the role of novel molecules and clinical parameters in predicting 90-day mortality in patients with sepsis. The results showed that levels of PTX3, sIL-1R2, and various cytokines were associated with clinical parameters and 90-day mortality. After 5 days of treatment, these levels decreased, parallel to the improvement of clinical parameters. A prognostic index combining age, blood urea nitrogen, PTX3, IL-6, and IL-18 had better predictive ability for 90-day mortality than the SOFA score.
