The epidemiological landscape of thyroid cancer worldwide: GLOBOCAN estimates for incidence and mortality rates in 2020

Margherita Pizzato et al.

Summary: The incidence rates of thyroid cancer in 2020 were higher in high human development index countries compared to low and medium human development index countries. However, mortality rates were relatively similar across different settings. This suggests an overdiagnosis effect in many countries and confirms the relevance of thyroid cancer overdiagnosis as a global public health problem.

Insights into the Relationship between Pentraxin-3 and Cancer

Maria Bogdan et al.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, but can be cured if detected early and treated effectively. Chronic inflammation and angiogenesis promote tumor development through metabolic dysregulation, while appropriate immune response limits tumor growth. Pentraxin-3 (PTX-3), a member of the long pentraxin subfamily, plays a crucial role in regulating inflammation, immune response, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. PTX-3 has both pro- and anti-tumor functions, making it a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring.

PTX3 mediates the infiltration, migration, and inflammation-resolving-polarization of macrophages in glioblastoma

Summary: The study reveals that PTX3 is upregulated in glioblastoma and is closely related to other immune-related genes in the tumor microenvironment. PTX3 is involved in regulating macrophage migration, inflammation-resolving polarization, and can predict immunotherapy response.

A cytokine/PTX3 prognostic index as a predictor of mortality in sepsis

Sadaf Davoudian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of novel molecules and clinical parameters in predicting 90-day mortality in patients with sepsis. The results showed that levels of PTX3, sIL-1R2, and various cytokines were associated with clinical parameters and 90-day mortality. After 5 days of treatment, these levels decreased, parallel to the improvement of clinical parameters. A prognostic index combining age, blood urea nitrogen, PTX3, IL-6, and IL-18 had better predictive ability for 90-day mortality than the SOFA score.

Summary: The study evaluated the relationship between inflammatory markers and characteristics of thyroid nodules, finding that the number of nodules was positively correlated with CRP levels and negatively correlated with fibrinogen levels. CRP can be used in prognosis and clinical follow-up for thyroid nodules.

Circulating and Synovial Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) Expression Levels Correlate With Rheumatoid Arthritis Severity and Tissue Infiltration Independently of Conventional Treatments Response

Marie-Astrid Boutet et al.

Summary: The study found that circulating levels of PTX3 are associated with disease activity and structural damages in early RA patients, while synovial PTX3 is linked to immune cell infiltration and ectopic lymphoid structures in the joint. High levels of PTX3 in the synovium and peripheral blood are associated with chronic inflammation typical of RA, with further mechanistic links requiring additional research.

PTX3 Regulation of Inflammation, Hemostatic Response, Tissue Repair, and Resolution of Fibrosis Favors a Role in Limiting Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Andrea Doni et al.

Summary: PTX3 is a soluble pattern recognition molecule involved in the humoral innate immune system and plays a crucial role in wound repair by facilitating ECM clearance. Studies suggest that PTX3 may have a significant role in the development of IPF and could be a potential target for therapeutic intervention.

Summary: PTX3 is a potential stromal-derived biomarker for PDAC, with higher sensitivity and specificity for detection, and can impact its secretion and evolution by modulating PSC activity through ATRA. These research findings are expected to be further validated in clinical trials.
