Risk Factors of Pertussis Among Older Adults in South Korea: A Nationwide Health Data-Based Case-Control Study

Hyungwoo Kim et al.

Summary: This matched case-control study in South Korea assessed the clinical characteristics associated with pertussis diagnosis among older adults. It found that comorbidities, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), cancer, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, autoimmune disease, and hyperlipidemia were associated with an increased risk of pertussis. Additionally, acute respiratory events, including pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), within 30 days prior to diagnosis were also strongly associated with pertussis diagnosis. This study provides real-world data on the underlying clinical characteristics of pertussis patients in South Korea.

Association between asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic otitis media

Sung Kyun Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the incidence of chronic otitis media (COM). The results show that the prevalence of COM is higher in patients with asthma and COPD, indicating that asthma and COPD may increase the risk of COM.

Bad to the Bone: The Effects of Therapeutic Glucocorticoids on Osteoblasts and Osteocytes

Manuel Gado et al.

Summary: Despite the development of monoclonal antibodies, glucocorticoids remain important in treating rheumatological and auto-inflammatory disorders. However, long-term exposure to therapeutic doses of glucocorticoids can lead to decreased bone mass and increased fracture risk. Recent evidence suggests that cells of the osteoblast lineage play a significant role in the development of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Associations of visceral adipose tissue with bone mineral density and fracture: observational and Mendelian randomization studies

Jianying Hu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the associations between visceral adipose tissue and bone mineral density as well as fracture risk, with gender-dependent outcomes and modifications in men based on adiposity. No evidence of causality was observed, implying that the observed association could be due to confounding factors.

Muscle-Bone Crosstalk in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Lijiao Zhang et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are common musculoskeletal comorbidities of COPD, affecting the quality of life and prognosis. Muscle and bone act as endocrine organs by producing myokines and osteokines, regulating functions. Myokines and osteokines play significant roles in COPD, potentially leading to muscle dysfunction and bone loss.
