Plasmid-Mediated Quinolone Resistance (PMQR) in Two Clinical Strains of Salmonella enterica Serovar Corvallis

Xenia Vazquez et al.

Summary: This study characterized two fluoroquinolone-resistant isolates of Salmonella enterica and found that they carried widely spread plasmids conferring resistance to multiple antibiotics. This finding is of great importance for the prevention and control of Salmonella.

Bacterial death from treatment with fluoroquinolones and other lethal stressors

Karl Drlica et al.

Summary: Quinolones trap topoisomerases on DNA to block replication and growth, with DNA ends released at higher drug concentrations leading to chromosome fragmentation. Repair processes stimulated by DNA ends are energetically expensive, with ROS accumulation causing secondary damage even after quinolone removal. Interference with ROS accumulation can confer tolerance to various lethal agents.
