Masomeh Pourmohsen et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the level of antibiotic resistance in Aeromonas hydrophila and found a high frequency of broad-spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase. These results indicate that Aeromonas hydrophila has a high level of antibiotic resistance, highlighting the need for stronger infection control measures in medical centers.

Plasmid-Mediated Ciprofloxacin Resistance Imparts a Selective Advantage on Escherichia coli ST131

Minh-Duy Phan et al.

Summary: The plasmid-associated resistance gene, AAC (6')-Ib-cr, provides a selective advantage for the dissemination of Escherichia coli ST131, a highly antibiotic resistant clone. This gene, which inactivates the fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin, is present in over 70% of strains from the rapidly growing subgroup of multidrug resistant ST131. The presence of this gene gives ST131 an edge even in the presence of chromosomal FQ-resistance mutations.

Comprehensive Analysis of Imipenemase (IMP)-Type Metallo-β-Lactamase: A Global Distribution Threatening Asia

Pisut Pongchaikul et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance, especially beta-lactam resistance, is a significant problem worldwide. IMP-type metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) has become a prominent enzyme in Asia, with 88 variants currently identified. IMP-1 is the most common variant. IMP-type MBLs have been detected in multiple species, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa being the most frequent carrier. The distribution of IMP-type MBLs in Asia has been observed in various countries. This study provides comprehensive insight into the global and regional prevalence of IMP-type MBLs, highlighting their resistance to carbapenems and third-generation cephalosporins.

Escherichia coli ST131 isolated from urological patients can acquire plasmid-mediated extended spectrum β-lactamase from other bacteria with high frequency

Tsubasa Kondo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of clonal group Escherichia coli ST131 in urologic patients and clarified the mechanisms underlying the high prevalence of antimicrobial resistant genes in ST131. The results showed that ST131 was the most dominant strain, with high rates of levofloxacin resistance and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase positivity. Furthermore, ST131 strains had higher proportions of quinolone resistance-determining region mutations and lower rates of CTX-M-9 gene positivity compared to non-ST131 strains.

Global epidemiology of CTX-M-type β-lactam resistance in human and animal

Chanchal Rana et al.

Summary: CTX-M ESBL is widely present in animal and human infections, with variations and distributions differing across regions. China, USA, and Japan have reported the highest incidences of CTX-M. Single amino acid substitutions in the CTX-M ESBL domain region can provide survival benefits to bacteria, with D240G being the most common variation. Variations in CTX-M enzymes vary by continent, with the highest variation in America, followed by Asia and Europe.

Convergence of virulence and antimicrobial resistance in increasingly prevalent Escherichia coli ST131 papGII plus sublineages

Michael Biggel et al.

Summary: The Escherichia coli ST131 lineage is a major cause of urinary tract and bloodstream infections worldwide, and it is highly resistant to antimicrobials. This study found a correlation between the presence of invasiveness-associated papGII pathogenicity islands (PAIs) and the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in ST131 isolates. The prevalence of papGII+ isolates has dramatically increased since 2005, and the emergence of these isolates may lead to more severe and difficult-to-treat extraintestinal infections.

Chromosomal integration of bla(CTX- M) genes in diverse Escherichia coli isolates recovered from river water in Japan

Ryota Gomi et al.

Summary: In this study, the genomes of CTX-M-producing E. coli isolates recovered from river water were sequenced and analyzed. The study revealed that environmental E. coli carry blaCTX-M genes in diverse genetic contexts, with a high prevalence of chromosomal blaCTX-M potentially indicating stable maintenance in environmental waters.

Transcriptional Analysis of IncFrepB-MediatedblaOXA-48-Positive Plasmid Characterized fromEscherichia coliST448

Deepjyoti Paul et al.

Summary: The study identified IncF(repB) plasmid carrying bla(OXA-48) in Escherichia coli strains, which was found to be conjugatively transferable. The strains were also found to coexist with bla(NDM-1) within IncX3-type plasmid. The copy number and transcriptional response of bla(OXA-48) were directly proportional to the increasing concentration of meropenem and ertapenem, but reversed in the case of imipenem. The identification of bla(OXA-48) through IncF(repB)-type plasmid indicates a potential route of spread of this resistance determinant and the insights gained from the transcriptional changes could facilitate the development of novel therapeutic options for multidrug-resistant infections.

Summary: The study revealed a diversity of ESBL genes in Gram-negative bacterial isolates, with bla(TEM) being the most prevalent type. The emergence of various ESBL genes with several co-existing genotypes is alarming, rendering extensive surveillance studies necessary to understand the transmission and epidemiology of such resistant gene-carrying isolates.

Molecular Epidemiology and Characteristics of CTX-M-55 Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli From Guangzhou, China

Shihan Zeng et al.

Summary: The CTX-M-55 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive rate has been increasing in recent years, showing resistance to ceftriaxone but sensitivity to ceftazidime, cefepime, and carbapenems among isolates with bla(CTX-M-55) gene. ST1193 is a common clone strain found carrying the bla(CTX-M-55) gene. The plasmids IncI1 and IncFII, along with mobile elements like ISEcp1 and IS26, may play a key role in the dissemination of CTX-M-55 genotypes.

Epidemiology of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli from repeated prevalence studies over 11 years in a long-term-care facility

Romain Martischang et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of ESBL-EC belonging to the ST131 H30 subclone showed an increasing trend from 2010 to 2015, followed by a decline. Multiple unnoticed ESBL-EC outbreaks occurred in LTCFs, and clonal expansion of a rare ST131 H89 subclone was observed. Despite discontinuation of contact precautions for ESBL-EC carriers since 2019, no rebound effect was observed in ESBL-EC prevalence or different subclones.

Clinical and Microbiological Characteristics of Recurrent Escherichia coli Bacteremia

Tatsuya Kobayashi et al.

Summary: In recurrent Escherichia coli bacteremia, genetically identical strains have more virulence factor (VF) genes compared to discordant strains. Patients with genetically identical or discordant E. coli bacteremia were more likely to have renal failure or neoplasms, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of antimicrobial susceptibility and biofilm formation potential.

Occurrence of genes associated with virulence in Escherichia coli isolates from chicken carcasses at different stages of processing at a slaughterhouse

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of different processing stages in the slaughterhouse on the detection of E. coli isolates carrying APEC predictor's virulence-associated genes, finding that scalding and pre-cooling procedures contributed most to reducing bacterial count. The presence of VAGs and potential APEC was observed at all points evaluated in the slaughterhouse, suggesting the potential transmission of bacteria carrying these genes to consumers.
