Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Mammary tumour cells remodel the bone marrow vascular microenvironment to support metastasis

Raymond K. H. Yip et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the preferential homing of mouse mammary tumor cells to specific blood vessels within the bone marrow during the metastasis process, with the tumor cells remodeling the local vasculature by producing granulocyte-colony stimulating factor. This hijacking of the host microenvironment by tumor cells leads to the formation of a pro-tumorigenic niche in the bone marrow, highlighting the importance of targeting this metastatic niche to inhibit blood vessel remodeling and reduce bone metastasis burden.

Identification of differentially expressed genes using microarray analysis and COL6A1 induction of bone metastasis in non-small cell lung cancer

Nan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, differentially expressed genes in NSCLC tissues with or without bone metastases were identified, with COL6A1 being chosen as the target gene. Functional experiments demonstrated that overexpression of COL6A1 promoted the proliferation and invasion of NSCLC cells, while knockdown inhibited these processes. Moreover, COL6A1 also affected the adhesion ability of cancer cells to osteoblasts. These findings suggest that COL6A1 may serve as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target for bone metastasis in NSCLC.

Immunoporosis: Role of Innate Immune Cells in Osteoporosis

Yogesh Saxena et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis, a result of bone remodeling imbalance, is closely related to the immune system and inflammatory diseases. Inflammatory mediators play a critical role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. Both innate and adaptive immune cells contribute to osteoporosis, with innate cells being the major effectors of inflammation.
