Mothers of children with Down syndrome: a clinical and epidemiological study

Joissy Aprigio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical and epidemiological profile of Down syndrome (DS) children and their mothers in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The results showed that advanced maternal age is a risk factor for DS, but most mothers lack awareness of the increased risk of aneuploidy. Although the majority of mothers received prenatal care, only a small percentage obtained a prenatal diagnosis of DS.

Chromosome Segregation in the Oocyte: What Goes Wrong during Aging

Marta Wasielak-Politowska et al.

Summary: The fertility and reproductive lifespan of human females decrease with age, leading to a prolonged post-reproductive period. The availability and quality of oocytes in the ovary play a significant role in female reproduction. Advanced maternal age is associated with increased rates of sub- and infertility, aneuploidy, miscarriages, and birth defects. The spindle apparatus and chromosome segregation during oocyte maturation are crucial for proper reproductive outcomes.

Prenatal diagnosis and molecular cytogenetic characterization of an inherited microdeletion of chromosome 16p11.2

Meihua Li et al.

Summary: Copy number variations (CNVs) in chromosome 16p11.2, including deletions and duplications, are not rare and are known to be a common genetic cause of autism spectrum disorder, overweightness, and related neurodevelopmental disorders. This study reports a case of prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling of a maternally inherited 16p11.2 microdeletion.

Potentials and challenges of chromosomal microarray analysis in prenatal diagnosis

Xijing Liu et al.

Summary: This review provides an updated summary of the application of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) for prenatal diagnosis, as well as discusses the challenges it faces with the emergence of genome sequencing techniques. Currently, CMA is suggested as the priority testing methodology in prenatal setting, but pregnant women may benefit from genome sequencing in the near future.

Prenatal Diagnosis Using Chromosomal Microarray Analysis in High-Risk Pregnancies

Ching-Hua Hsiao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the value of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) in prenatal diagnosis for high-risk pregnancies. The results show that CMA can effectively detect chromosomal abnormalities and copy number variants, providing important diagnostic information for high-risk pregnancies.

Advanced maternal age and adverse pregnancy outcomes

Alexander P. Frick

Summary: Advanced maternal age is associated with a wide range of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including increased risks for miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, stillbirth, and preterm birth. However, varying definitions in both maternal age and reported outcomes can make it difficult to provide accurate counseling to individual women about their specific risks. It is important to clarify the magnitude of these risks in order to provide more informed clinical counseling and decision-making for pregnant women of advanced maternal age.

Advanced Maternal Age-associated SIRT1 Deficiency Compromises Trophoblast Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition through an Increase in Vimentin Acetylation

Liling Xiong et al.

Summary: SIRT1 is downregulated in AMA placentas, affecting cell function and migration, leading to premature senescence. SIRT1 promotes trophoblast epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by modulating vimentin acetylation.

Chances and Challenges of New Genetic Screening Technologies (NIPT) in Prenatal Medicine from a Clinical Perspective: A Narrative Review

Ivonne Bedei et al.

Summary: Since the 1960s, screening for Down syndrome has advanced significantly, with methods such as first trimester screening and non-invasive prenatal testing now being widely used. In parallel, new technologies like chromosomal microarrays and sequencing methods have expanded diagnostic capabilities for fetal anomalies.

16p11.2 deletion syndrome

Wendy K. Chung et al.

Summary: Deletions in the 16p11.2 BP4 and BP5 region are a common cause of neurodevelopmental disorders and autism spectrum disorder. Patients often experience delays in speech, phonology, and language, lower intelligence quotient, as well as motor coordination difficulties and autism.

Analysis of Genomic Copy Number Variation in Miscarriages During Early and Middle Pregnancy

Heming Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified a high rate of chromosomal abnormalities in fetuses with miscarriage during early and middle pregnancy, with a significantly higher numerical chromosomal abnormality rate in pregnant women aged >=35 compared to <35. The early fetal chromosomal abnormality rate was higher than the middle fetal rate, and there were 168 genes enriched in the VOUS + pCNV regions, associated with 41 functions and 12 pathways.
