Photon-shot-noise-limited transient absorption soft X-ray spectroscopy at the European XFEL

Loic Le Guyader et al.

Summary: Femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a promising technique for studying out-of-equilibrium dynamics in material and energy research. This study presents a dedicated setup for soft X-rays at the European XFEL, which uses a beam-splitting zone plate to create three copies of the incoming beam for transmission measurement. Shot-by-shot analysis of transmission is enabled by simultaneously detecting the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as monitoring the incoming intensity. An imaging detector with high frame rate and sensitivity is employed for photon detection.

Polarized phonons carry angular momentum in ultrafast demagnetization

S. R. Tauchert et al.

Summary: The research shows that when a nickel film is subjected to ultrashort laser pulses, it loses its magnetic order within femtosecond timescales and forms a unique population of anisotropic high-frequency phonons. These results highlight the general importance of polarized phonons in non-equilibrium dynamics and phase transitions.

Ultrafast Renormalization of the On-Site Coulomb Repulsion in a Cuprate Superconductor

Denitsa R. Baykusheva et al.

Summary: Ultrafast lasers are becoming increasingly important in controlling and stabilizing emergent phases in quantum materials. In this work, the researchers demonstrate the light-induced renormalization of the Hubbard U in a cuprate superconductor, paving the way for the manipulation of superconductivity and magnetism in light-driven quantum materials.

The soft X-ray monochromator at the SASE3 beamline of the European XFEL: from design to operation

N. Gerasimova et al.

Summary: This article presents the design and performance of the SASE3 grating monochromator at the European XFEL's SASE3 soft X-ray beamline. The monochromator is designed to control both photon energy and temporal resolution, which is demanding due to the unique capability of a free-electron laser source. The current realization of the SASE3 monochromator is discussed, including the use of two gratings with different resolving powers for different experimental needs.

Electronic origin of x-ray absorption peak shifts

S. Shallcross et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic processes of ultrafast demagnetization using first-principles dynamical simulations. The experimentally observed energy peak shift can be explained by laser-induced changes in band occupation, and different behaviors are observed for cobalt and nickel.

Ultrafast modification of the electronic structure of a correlated insulator

O. Granaes et al.

Summary: The balance between Coulomb repulsion and kinematic effects plays a crucial role in the electronic structure of correlated electron materials. This study explores the electronic response of the correlated electron insulator NiO using strong electromagnetic fields, revealing a transient directional charge transfer behavior and emphasizing the importance of retardation effects in electronic screening.

The MiniSDD-Based 1-Mpixel Camera of the DSSC Project for the European XFEL

Matteo Porro et al.

Summary: The first DSSC 1-Mpixel camera was made available at the European XFEL in February 2019, optimized for photon science applications. It features direct conversion Si sensors with 1024x1024 pixel resolution and a peak frame rate of 4.5 MHz to cope with the demanding X-ray pulse time structure. The camera is equipped with miniaturized silicon drift detector (MiniSDD) pixel arrays and achieves noise values of about 60 electrons r.m.s. at the highest frame rate.

Effect of lattice excitations on transient near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

N. Rothenbach et al.

Summary: In this study, time-dependent and constituent-specific spectral changes in soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of an [Fe/MgO](8) metal/insulator heterostructure after laser excitation were analyzed at the O K-edge with picosecond time resolution. It was found that the oxygen absorption edge of the insulator showed a uniform intensity decrease of the fine structure at elevated phononic temperatures. The sensitivity of transient near-edge XAS to phonons was demonstrated by combining XAS with ultrafast electron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations.

Electron thermalization and relaxation in laser-heated nickel by few-femtosecond core-level transient absorption spectroscopy

Hung-Tzu Chang et al.

Summary: Direct measurements of photoexcited carrier dynamics in nickel were conducted using XUV transient absorption spectroscopy. The study found that after initial rapid carrier thermalization, the increase in electron temperature is linearly proportional to the Gaussian broadening factor, allowing real-time tracking of electron temperature relaxation. Additionally, electron thermalization time was observed to decrease with increasing pump fluence.
