Characterizing the Effect of Spatial Heterogeneity and the Deployment of Sampled Plots on the Uncertainty of Ground Truth on a Coarse Grid Scale: Case Study for Near-Infrared (NIR) Surface Reflectance

Summary: This study quantifies the influence of spatial heterogeneity on the uncertainty of ground truth for surface reflectance satellite products. It shows that optimal sampling plays a more important role in reducing uncertainty than increasing the number of sampled plots. Assessing the active-passive approach at variant incidence angles for microwave brightness temperature downscaling

Summary: The study evaluated two active-passive Tb downscaling algorithms based on airborne experimental datasets. The results showed that both methods could provide reliable downscaled T (b) at the same incidence angle. The linear relationship between T (b) and sigma was robust under variant incidence angles, and the SA method outperformed the TSR method in terms of lower RMSE values and higher correlation.

Robust Supervised Method for Nonlinear Spectral Unmixing Accounting for Endmember Variability

Summary: This work presents a supervised approach for unmixing mineral powder mixtures, utilizing geodesic distances between mixtures and endmembers for abundance estimation and learning a mapping from geodesic abundances to spectra following a linear model. The trained model is shown to be applicable to manifolds with similar nonlinear behavior, and can be used for estimating true abundances under spectral variability. Experiments on simulated and real mineral mixtures demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to other supervised and nonlinear models.

An investigation on microwave transmissivity at frequencies of 18.7 and 36.5 GHz for diverse forest types during snow season

Summary: The study investigated the dependence of microwave radiation on frequency, polarization, and forest type through ground-based microwave radiometric observation experiment. New empirical transmissivity models for three forest types were developed based on experimental data, providing diverse asymptotic transmissivity saturation levels and the corresponding saturation point of woody stem volume. The root-mean-square error results between T-B simulations and AMSR-2 observations are approximately 3-6 K, offering an experimental and theoretical reference for further development of inversion models for snow parameters in forested areas.
