An Open-Source and Wearable System for Measuring 3D Human Motion in Real-Time

Patrick Slade et al.

Summary: This article introduces an open-source wearable system, OpenSenseRT, that can estimate upper and lower extremity kinematics in real time. Compared to optical motion capture, the system has lower cost and simple replication, and achieves similar accuracy. The system enables movement analysis in clinics, homes, and free-living settings.

Falls Among People With Bilateral Vestibulopathy A Review of Causes, Incidence, Injuries, and Methods

Nolan Herssens et al.

Summary: People with bilateral vestibulopathy often experience falls due to reasons like loss of balance, darkness, and uneven ground, resulting in bruises and rarely fractures. Current research on falls in this population is limited, calling for larger prospective studies following best practices to improve interventions.

Three-Dimensional Lower-Limb Kinematics from Accelerometers and Gyroscopes with Simple and Minimal Functional Calibration Tasks: Validation on Asymptomatic Participants

Lena Carcreff et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity of a 7-IMUs system compared to an optoelectronic system, and found good accordance in sagittal plane kinematics, but caution is required for clinical use due to the presence of offsets.

Asymmetry and Variability Should Be Included in the Assessment of Gait Function in Poststroke Hemiplegia With Independent Ambulation During Early Rehabilitation

Woo-Sub Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to extract independent features from poststroke gait data and found that temporal asymmetry and variability are important factors in early rehabilitation. These characteristics are independent of each other and can guide the assessment and treatment strategy in poststroke gait rehabilitation.

Estimating Lower Limb Kinematics Using a Reduced Wearable Sensor Count

Luke Sy et al.

Summary: The algorithm accurately estimates the kinematics of the pelvis, thigh, and shank during walking using only three wearable inertial sensors. It can track the average position and orientation of motion relative to the mid-pelvis origin, as well as calculate knee and hip joint angles. With low computation cost and the use of only three sensors, gait parameters can be computed in real-time and remotely, making it convenient for long-term gait monitoring and informing real-time gait assistive devices.

Reference in-vitro dataset for inertial-sensor-to-bone alignment applied to the tibiofemoral joint

Ive Weygers et al.

Summary: Skin-attached inertial sensors are increasingly utilized for kinematic analysis, but accurately aligning sensor axes with anatomical axes remains a challenge. Model-based alignment methods show promise in addressing this issue and improving accuracy in kinematic measurements.
