Statin exposure is associated with reduced development of acuteon-chronic liver failure in a Veterans Affairs cohort

Nadim Mahmud et al.

Summary: A large retrospective cohort study found a significant association between statin use and reduced risk of high-grade ACLF development in patients with cirrhosis. Increasing doses of statin and longer duration of statin exposure were both associated with progressively reduced hazard of developing ACLF. The results support the potential role of statins in preventing ACLF in cirrhotic patients.

Statin use and discontinuation in Danes age 70 and older: a nationwide drug utilisation study

Wade Thompson et al.

Summary: The study found that approximately one in three Danes aged 70 and older were taking statins in 2016. The prevalence of statin use was generally stable in the 70 to 79 age group, but increased in the 80 and older age group. Around 19% of long-term statin users discontinued therapy between 2014 and 2016, with increasing age being the strongest predictor of statin discontinuation.

Trends in statin utilisation in US adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Jacqueline B. Henson et al.

Summary: The study found that statin use among a nationally representative population with NAFLD has increased over time, but guideline-concordant use remains low. A known diagnosis of NAFLD was previously a negative predictor of statin use, but this has changed in more recent times. Further efforts are needed to improve guideline-indicated statin use in this high-risk population.

Malnutrition in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Julia Traub et al.

Summary: Liver cirrhosis is a growing public health threat globally, often accompanied by malnutrition. The underdiagnosis of malnutrition in cirrhosis patients underscores the importance of regular screening, assessment, and interventions by healthcare professionals. Further research is needed to better understand the pathogenic mechanisms and develop targeted therapeutic strategies for malnutrition in cirrhosis.

Socioeconomic inequalities in the incidence of alcohol-related liver disease: A nationwide Danish study

Gro Askgaard et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant socioeconomic inequalities in the incidence of ALD among individuals aged 30-69, with educational level and employment status showing a negative correlation with ALD incidence. As age increased, the incidence of ALD also increased gradually, leading to larger absolute differences in incidence rates between different socioeconomic statuses.
