Paddlewheel dirhodium(II) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene or phosphine ligand: New reactivity and selectivity

Biqiong Hong et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the strategies for introducing various bridging ligands such as carboxylic acids, amide, and phosphoric acids in dirhodium(II)-catalyzed organic reactions, which significantly enhance the activity and selectivity of the metal complexes involved. The newly explored reactivity of dirhodium(II) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbenes or phosphines as axial ligands is discussed, as well as the asymmetric tries where the stereo-induction solely comes from the axial ligand. The reactions catalyzed by inherent chiral ortho-metalated dirhodium(II)/phosphine complexes are also examined.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Asymmetric Construction of Atropisomers

Jun Kee Cheng et al.

Summary: Atropisomerism is a stereochemical behavior exhibited by three-dimensional molecules with rotationally restricted sigma bonds, and compounds with atropisomerically chiral properties are increasingly utilized in fields where molecular asymmetry is influential. There is a steady demand for atroposelective synthesis, leading to conceptually novel and streamlined methods for expanding the structural diversity of atropisomers. This review summarizes key achievements in the stereoselective preparation of biaryl, heterobiaryl, and nonbiaryl atropisomers between 2015 and 2020, emphasizing synthetic strategies for each structural class and potential applications of atropochiral targets.

An axial-to-axial chirality transfer strategy for atroposelective construction of C-N axial chirality

Ze-Shui Liu et al.

Summary: A general and efficient method for accessing C-N atropisomers through an axial-to-axial chirality transfer strategy based on palladium/chiral norbornene cooperative catalysis has been developed. The obtained C-N axial chirality originates from the preformed transient C-C axial chirality with high fidelity, allowing for the synthesis of a variety of C-N axially chiral phenanthridinones in excellent enantioselectivities. This method can be applied for the construction of two stereogenic axes via double atroposelective C-H arylation or further transformation of the products via axial-to-axial diastereoinduction.

Twofold C-H Activation-Based Enantio- and Diastereoselective C-H Arylation Using Diarylacetylenes as Rare Arylating Reagents

Panjie Hu et al.

Summary: A novel method for the construction of biaryls with central and axial chirality through rhodium-catalyzed 1:2 coupling of diarylphosphinic amides and diarylacetylenes has been reported. This new method shows better chemoselectivity compared to previously explored Miura-Satoh type 1:2 coupling, and proceeds under mild conditions using a rare arylating reagent.

Atroposelective transformation of axially chiral (hetero)biaryls. From desymmetrization to modern resolution strategies

Jose A. Carmona et al.

Summary: This tutorial review provides a comprehensive overview of methodologies available for the atroposelective transformation of (heterobiaryl)biaryl precursors towards enantiomerically enriched products and discusses the conceptual aspects associated with each type of transformation. Several strategies have been developed based on the presence or absence of symmetry in the starting material and the occurrence of racemization or dynamicization events, including desymmetrization, classical kinetic resolution (KR), dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR), and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT). Seminal contributions and selected examples are discussed to highlight the potential of these synthetic tools.
