Effect of the Temperature and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) Concentration on THF Hydrate Formation in Aqueous Solution

Biao Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation mechanism of THF hydrate was investigated using low-field NMR. A quantitative relationship between NMR T-2 and the mass of THF hydrate was established. The results showed that T-2 of THF solution was controlled by temperature and THF concentration, and the formation of THF hydrate was influenced by temperature and THF concentration.

Anti-gas hydrate surfaces: perspectives, progress and prospects

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: It is critical to understand the intrinsic interactions between a solid surface and gas hydrate to solve the complex role of surface properties in hydrate nucleation. Additionally, mechanisms to suppress hydrate deposition and surfaces that can manipulate these mechanisms need to be well-understood. Furthermore, research on correlating and understanding hydrate adhesion on different scales will help in designing surfaces with low hydrate adhesion.

Investigation into the Inhibition of Methane Hydrate Formation in the Presence of Hydroxy- and Esteryl-Terminated Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)

Cuiping Tang et al.

Summary: Adding hydrate inhibitors, such as Es-PVCap-OH, is an effective method to prevent gas hydrates from blocking pipelines and equipment. This study investigated the inhibitory performance of Es-PVCap-OH for methane hydrate formation and compared it with the kinetic inhibitor PVCap. The results showed that Es-PVCap-OH exhibited better inhibitory performance and changed the morphology of the hydrate structure.

Non-amide kinetic hydrate inhibitors: A review

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: Kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) have been used for decades to solve the hydrate formation problem in oil and gas flowlines. Traditional amide-based polymers have been supplemented by non-amide KHIs, including amine-based, amine oxide-based, phosphonate-based, sulfonate-based, hydroxyl-based, acrylate-based, and urethane-based KHIs. The inhibition performance of non-amide polymers is related to their chemical structures and the hydrophobic groups connected to the functional groups. Non-amide KHIs with suitable hydrophobic groups show better inhibition performance than some commercial amide-containing KHIs.

Local Ice-like Structure at the Liquid Water Surface

Nathan L. Odendahl et al.

Summary: Experiments and simulations have shown that liquid water's surfaces can exhibit similar structural features to crystalline ice surfaces. These findings deepen our understanding of ice-like structures at the liquid's boundary and suggest the presence of quasi-ice layers at the surface of liquid water above the melting point.

Revealing the role of liquid preordering in crystallisation of supercooled liquids

Yuan-Chao Hu et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of non-classical crystal nucleation pathways has revealed the role of fluctuations in the liquid structural order, not considered in classical nucleation theory. On the other hand, classical crystal growth theory states that crystal growth is independent of interfacial energy, but simulations of supercooled liquids now show that crystal-like liquid preordering play an essential role in nucleation and growth processes - calling for extensions of the classical theory.

Mechanically robust lattices inspired by deep-sea glass sponges

Matheus C. Fernandes et al.

Summary: Computational analysis and mechanical testing have shown that the skeletal system of deep-sea hexactinellid sponges has achieved near-optimal resistance to buckling through evolution. The diagonal reinforcement strategy of the sponge achieves the highest buckling resistance for a given amount of material, and the sponge-inspired lattice geometry approaches the optimum material distribution for the design space considered. Lessons learned from studying sponge skeletal systems can be applied to geometrically optimize square lattice structures to avoid global structural buckling and improve material use in modern infrastructural applications.

Universal correlation for gas hydrates suppression temperature of inhibited systems: IV. Water activity

Jeong-Hoon Sa et al.

Summary: In this study, two different approaches were proposed to estimate the water activity for systems containing inhibitors: ice melting point and activity coefficient models. These methods provide a simple and reliable prediction of hydrate suppression temperatures for inhibited systems, advocating for their use over traditional methods.

Organics-Coated Nanoclays Further Promote Hydrate Formation Kinetics

Jiafei Zhao et al.

Summary: The presence of organics-coated nanoclays in natural sediments can significantly reduce the induction time of CO2 hydrate formation, attributed to the negative charges and functional groups of the organics. This finding suggests a potentially sustainable promoting effect on hydrate formation through the unique properties of the nanoclays in complex natural environments.

Influence of the Particle Size of Porous Media on the Formation of Natural Gas Hydrate: A Review

Yue Qin et al.

Summary: Natural gas hydrate (NGH) is a new source of energy with great potential for the future. The impact of porous media, specifically particle size and surface characteristics, on the formation and occurrence of NGH is still unclear and requires further exploration. The interaction between the complex pore structure of porous media, particle size, and initial water saturation on the hydrate formation process remains a subject of debate and needs more study.

Molecular dynamics simulations on formation of CO2 hydrate in the presence of metal particles

Ni Liu et al.

Summary: The study used molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the growth kinetics of CO2 hydrates with the addition of different metal particles. It was found that copper particles had the most significant promoting effect on hydrate growth, while iron particles had a moderate effect and silver particles had no obvious effect. The presence of metal particles with high specific surface areas greatly enhanced mass and heat transfer among the gas, liquid, and hydrate phases, facilitating CO2 hydrate growth.
