The Combined Effect of Potential Probiotic Bacillus licheniformis MCC 2514 and Bifidobacterium breve NCIM 5671 Towards Anti-inflammatory Activity on HT-29 Cell Lines

H. S. Rohith et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effects of a combination of Bacillus licheniformis and Bifidobacterium breve on the gene expression and immune response of HT-29 cells. The combination of these probiotic bacteria showed anti-inflammatory activity and improved the gastrointestinal environment, making it a promising treatment for intestinal disorders.

The influence of cytokines on the complex pathology of ulcerative colitis

Hiroshi Nakase et al.

Summary: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is specifically affected by genetic alterations, environmental factors, microbiota, and mucosal immune dysregulation, leading to a lack of response in 30%-55% of patients to current therapies. The expression levels of cytokines associated with treatment depend on disease stage and patient characteristics, suggesting that future targeted therapies should focus on these differences and individual cytokine profiles.

Select animal models of colitis and their value in predicting clinical efficacy of biological therapies in ulcerative colitis

Janine Bilsborough et al.

Summary: This article discusses chronic animal models used to evaluate the pre-clinical efficacy of therapeutic molecules for UC, finding that none of the models are consistently superior in predicting efficacy. Evaluation of multiple models with varying colitis induction mechanisms is necessary to understand potential drug efficacy, and the development of more complex models reflecting human chronicity/heterogeneity is needed. Furthermore, transformational changes in clinical efficacy are likely to occur only when precision medicine approaches are employed.

Therapeutic Effects of Probiotic Minas Frescal Cheese on the Attenuation of Ulcerative Colitis in a Murine Model

Barbara F. Cordeiro et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that probiotic Minas Frescal cheese containing Lactococcus lactis NCDO 2118 can prevent DSS-induced colitis in mice. Consumption of probiotic cheese reduced the severity of colitis, alleviating weight loss, disease activity index, colon shortening, and histopathological score. Additionally, probiotic cheese increased the expression of tight junctions' proteins and IL-10 release, suggesting its potential as a new probiotic functional food for personalized nutrition in the context of IBD.

In vitro validation studies for adhesion factor and adhesion efficiency of probiotic Bacillus licheniformis MCC 2514 and Bifidobacterium breve NCIM 5671 on HT-29 cell lines

H. S. Rohith et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the colonizing efficiency of probiotic Bacillus licheniformis MCC 2514 compared to Bifidobacterium breve NCIM 5671 on epithelial cell line HT-29. B. licheniformis showed higher adhesion and invasion capabilities on pathogen Kocuria rhizophila ATCC 9341 compared to Bif. breve. The in vitro studies showed no cytotoxic effects of the tested bacterial strains on HT-29 cells, indicating their potential for probiotic applications.

Protective effect of sarsasapogenin in TNBS induced ulcerative colitis in rats associated with downregulation of pro-inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress

Deepa S. Mandlik et al.

Summary: The study found that treatment with SG and SG + FC combination significantly reduced inflammation and symptoms, restored oxidative stress markers, and improved histopathological changes in rats with TNBS-induced UC. Combination treatment could potentially be a promising therapeutic target for managing UC while reducing the long-term adverse effects of FC.
