Genome-wide analysis of calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) family and functional characterization of TaCDPK25-U in response to drought stress in wheat

Bin Linghu et al.

Summary: Calcium (Ca2+)-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) is a biomacromolecule that acts as a unique Ca2+ sensor and effector for calcium signaling, playing a vital role in plant growth, development, and stress responses. This study identified and characterized the CDPK family in wheat, discovering their gene structure, protein domains, conserved motifs, and cis-acting elements. The study also identified tissue-specific and stress-responsive CDPK candidates and demonstrated their roles in drought tolerance. Additionally, the study showed the positive regulation of a specific CDPK isoform by TaDREB3 in improving drought tolerance. This study provides insights into the evolution and function of the CDPK family in wheat.

Genomic analysis of isopentenyltransferase genes and functional characterization of TaIPT8 indicates positive effects of cytokinins on drought tolerance in wheat

Na Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, 24 isopentenyltransferase (IPT) genes involved in cytokinin synthesis were identified in the wheat genome. The expression patterns of these genes under drought conditions were characterized. Mutants with decreased levels of tZ-type cytokinins exhibited reduced drought tolerance, while transgenic wheat plants with induced TaIPT8 showed enhanced drought tolerance. These findings provide insights into the role of cytokinins in the drought response of wheat.

Summary: FBX proteins are subunits of the SCF complex and play a major role in plant responses to diverse developmental and stress conditions. The TaFBX gene family in wheat is rich and distributed non-homogeneously within the genome, with a different pattern at various observation levels possibly due to multiple complex events. Differentially expressed TaFBX genes are more present in specific chromosomal regions than expected, indicating the preservation of major genes in those regions.
