Percutaneous carbon-PEEK instrumentation for spine tumors: a prospective observational study

Sokol Trungu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, surgical, clinical, and radiological outcomes of percutaneous carbon-PEEK instrumentations for spine tumors. The results showed that percutaneous carbon-PEEK implants had favorable effects and improved the quality of life in patients undergoing spine tumor surgery. Further clinical trials and biomechanical evaluations are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Survival Trends After Surgery for Spinal Metastatic Tumors: 20-Year Cancer Center Experience

Robert J. Rothrock et al.

Summary: The study found that postoperative survival among patients with spinal metastases has improved over the past 20 years, particularly in patients with kidney, breast, lung, and colon tumors metastatic to the spine. Patients with synchronous metastatic disease had better survival compared to those with metachronous disease. These results emphasize the need for long-term outcome consideration in treatment decisions for patients undergoing surgery for spinal metastatic tumors.

Can Polyether Ether Ketone Dethrone Titanium as the Choice Implant Material for Metastatic Spine Tumor Surgery?

Naresh Kumar et al.

Summary: Instrumentation in metastatic spine tumor surgery (MSTS) plays a crucial role in providing stability to the spinal column. Titanium, the current material of choice, poses challenges in radiotherapy planning due to artifacts it generates, while PEEK, an emerging alternative, offers minimal stress shielding but lacks bioactivity and rigidity. Surface modification and composite formation may improve the bioactivity and mechanical properties of PEEK implants. Despite difficulties in handling, PEEK and modified PEEK implants show promise for future development in MSTS.

Evolution of materials for implants in metastatic spine disease till date - Have we found an ideal material?

Naresh Kumar et al.

Summary: Ti6Al4V is widely used in metastatic spine tumor surgery, but it has issues like stress-shielding and imaging interference. PEEK is a promising alternative due to its low Young's modulus and minimal imaging artifacts, but faces challenges in providing immediate stability postoperatively.

Comparative Analysis of 3D-Printed Artificial Vertebral Body Versus Titanium Mesh Cage in Repairing Bone Defects Following Single-Level Anterior Cervical Corpectomy and Fusion

Tao Fang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of 3D-printed artificial vertebral body and titanium mesh cage in repairing bone defects for single-level anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF). Results showed that the 3D-printed group had lower subsidence rate, better cervical physiological curvature, and higher clinical scores compared to the TMC group. Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in clinical outcomes at 3 months and 1 year post-surgery.

Anterior Corpectomy and Plating with Carbon-PEEK Instrumentation for Cervical Spinal Metastases: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes

Sokol Trungu et al.

Summary: This study reported the surgical, clinical, and radiological outcomes of anterior carbon-PEEK instrumentations for cervical spinal metastases. Results showed significant improvements in Neck Disability Index scores, quality of life, segmental Cobb angle, and cervical lordosis postoperatively and at follow-up. Carbon/PEEK implants are a safe alternative with lower artifacts in imaging and radiation planning, warranting further comparative and cost-effectiveness studies.
