Cisgender women with HIV in the United States: how have HIV care continuum outcomes changed over time? 2015-2020

Jesse Garrett O'Shea et al.

Summary: This study found that there was no meaningful improvement in HIV care continuum outcomes among women with HIV from 2015 to 2019 in the United States, raising concerns about the achievement of Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US (EHE) initiative goals. To improve the health of women with HIV and reduce HIV transmission, multifaceted interventions including retaining women in care, increasing antiretroviral therapy adherence, and addressing social determinants of health are urgently needed.

Gut Epithelial-derived CXCL9 Maintains Gut Homeostasis Through Preventing Overgrown E. coli

Jianmei Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the function of CXCL9 in gut epithelial cells and its mechanism of killing E. coli. The findings demonstrated that CXCL9 expressed in gut epithelial cells can kill overgrown E. coli through the aceE pathway to maintain gut homeostasis.

MicroRNA and Gut Microbiota: Tiny but Mighty-Novel Insights into Their Cross-talk in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Pathogenesis and Therapeutics

Maite Casado-Bedmar et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and intestinal microbiota play important roles in the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and their bidirectional communication has therapeutic potential. This review discusses the mechanisms through which miRNAs and intestinal microbiota interact, and the diagnostic power and therapeutic potential resulting from their communication after fecal transplantation, probiotics intake, or anti-miRNAs or miRNA mimics administration.

Sequence meets function-microbiota and cardiovascular disease

Myungsuk Kim et al.

Summary: The role of gut microbiota in human health, particularly in cardiovascular diseases, has been recognized. Several potential mechanisms, including gut permeability and endotoxemia, increased immune system activation, and microbial derived metabolites, have been proposed to explain the associations between gut microbiota and cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the mode of action of the gut microbiota in disease susceptibility and severity is crucial. Additionally, the intersection of metabolomics and microbiota research may provide novel targets to reduce disease susceptibility.

The gut microbiome in subclinical atherosclerosis: a population-based multiphenotype analysis

Sibo Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of gut microbiota in vascular physiology in a subclinical elderly population. The results show that gut microbes significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of carotid atherosclerosis, and certain lifestyle factors can impact the composition of gut microbiota, leading to changes in vascular health.

Act Locally, Act Globally-Microbiota, Barriers, and Cytokines in Atherosclerosis

Natalia Kurilenko et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a lipid-driven chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation and growth of atherosclerotic plaques in arteries, and is a major predisposing factor for stroke and heart attack. Immun-mediated mechanisms are implicated in the disease progression, with cytokines playing a key role in regulating atherosclerosis. Increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines are always associated with the progression of atherosclerosis.

Integrating taxonomic, functional, and strain-level profiling of diverse microbial communities with bioBakery 3

Francesco Beghini et al.

Summary: Culture-independent analyses of microbial communities have advanced significantly in the past decade, particularly due to the emergence of Shotgun Metagenomics. bioBakery 3, a newly developed toolset, enhances the accuracy and scope of taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic profiling in microbial community studies by providing an expanding set of reference sequences.

Common Variants Associated With OSMR Expression Contribute to Carotid Plaque Vulnerability, but Not to Cardiovascular Disease in Humans

Danielle van Keulen et al.

Summary: The study found that a genetic variant (rs1316887) in the OSMR locus is associated with increased plaque vulnerability, but not with coronary calcification or cardiovascular disease risk. The precise biological mechanisms through which OSM signaling affects plaque morphology remain unclear.

Cytotoxic T-Cell Trafficking Chemokine Profiles Correlate With Defined Mucosal Microbial Communities in Colorectal Cancer

Jiali Zhang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the expression of major cytotoxic T-cell trafficking chemokines and associated microbiota profiles in CRC patients, finding increased expression of CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL11 in tumor tissues. The high expression of CXCL9 was associated with enhanced CD8(+) T-cell infiltration and improved survival. Interestingly, the microbiota in tumor tissues showed reduced diversity and an increase in oral bacteria, with differences in microbial composition between tumor and adjacent normal tissues.
