BDNF signaling in context: From synaptic regulation to psychiatric disorders

Camille S. Wang et al.

Summary: This review examines the importance of spatial and temporal factors on BDNF activity, particularly in processes such as synaptogenesis, plasticity, and psychiatric disorder treatment. Understanding the fundamental physiology of BDNF and new approaches to control its signaling in time and space can lead to improved therapeutics and patient outcomes.

Transplantation of gut microbiota derived from Alzheimer's disease mouse model impairs memory function and neurogenesis in C57BL/6 mice

Namkwon Kim et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that causes memory and cognitive decline. Recent studies suggest that gut microbiota may play a role in the disease. In this study, fecal microbiota transplantation from 5xFAD mice into normal mice resulted in decreased neurogenesis and memory impairment.

β-Glucan from Lentinula edodes prevents cognitive impairments in high-fat diet-induced obese mice: involvement of colon-brain axis

Wei Pan et al.

Summary: The study found that both short-term and long-term supplementation of L. edodes beta-glucan prevented gut microbial composition shifts induced by a high-fat diet. Long-term supplementation also prevented cognitive impairments induced by the high-fat diet, improved synaptic ultrastructure, reduced neuroinflammation, and ameliorated brain-derived neurotrophic factor deficits in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Additionally, beta-glucan supplementation increased mucosal thickness, upregulated tight junction protein expression, decreased plasma LPS levels, and inhibited proinflammatory macrophage accumulation in the colon of high-fat diet-fed mice.

Gut microbiota-derived propionate mediates the neuroprotective effect of osteocalcin in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease

Yan-fang Hou et al.

Summary: The study showed that osteocalcin (OCN) can improve motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal loss in a Parkinson's disease mouse model. Manipulating the gut microbiome by OCN led to increased propionate levels, which correlated with improvements in motor deficits and dopaminergic neuronal loss in the PD mice. The activation of FFAR3 receptor by propionate in the enteric nervous system might be the main mechanism behind the neuroprotective effects of OCN on Parkinson's disease.
