Physical plugging of lost circulation fractures at microscopic level

Chengyuan Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the formation of plugging zones in fractures using a microscopic visualization experimental device. The experimental results indicate that the formation of fracture plugging zone can be divided into retention stage and plugging stage. Different materials, such as spherical materials, flaky materials, and fibers, play different roles in the retention and plugging process. This study provides insights for the selection and design of lost circulation control materials in deep fractured tight reservoirs.

Study on preparation and plugging effect of sawdust gel particle in fractured reservoir

Wanli Kang et al.

Summary: A preformed sawdust gel particle (S-PPG) with superior performance than conventional preformed particle gel (PPG) was presented, and its microscopic morphology, swelling property, viscoelasticity, etc. were studied. The results showed that S-PPG had better performance and could be used as an alternative plugging material.

Formation mechanisms of fracture plugging zone and optimization of plugging particles

L. E. Shaofei et al.

Summary: This article investigates the formation mechanisms of plugging zone and criteria for fracture plugging. It uses experiments and tests to study the formation process of the plugging zone and analyzes the composition and ratios of particles of different sizes. The research results show that the formation of the plugging zone undergoes a process from inertial flow to quasi-static flow, and the plugging zone is composed of fracture mouth plugging particles, bridging particles, and filling particles.

Evaluating sealability of blended smart polymer and fiber additive for geothermal drilling with the effect of fracture opening size

Musaab Magzoub et al.

Summary: The paper evaluates the performance of thermoset shape memory polymers in sealing near wellbore fractures of different sizes in geothermal wells, showing that a 3% by weight SMP and fiber blend can effectively plug a 1000 μm fracture. Increasing the weight concentration of the SMP to 6% is needed to plug a larger 3000 μm fracture. The study highlights the importance of key parameters such as type of loss circulation materials, concentration, and particle size distribution in optimizing the performance of drilling fluid loss treatment.

Shape Memory Polymers as Lost Circulation Materials for Sealing Wide-Opened Natural Fractures

Maryam Tabatabaei et al.

Summary: In this study, shape memory polymers (SMPs) are used to prepare programmed lost circulation materials (LCMs) for sealing large fractures; a series of thermomechanical programming steps trigger their expansion, showing potential for bridging wide fractures; SMP particles form an entangled network across the fracture to effectively seal, examined for efficiency using a permeability plugging apparatus.
