State-resolved ultrafast charge and spin dynamics in [Co/Pd] multilayers

Loic Le Guyader et al.

Summary: Using transient absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized x rays, we investigated the dynamics of laser-excited hole states below the Fermi level and unoccupied states above the Fermi level in ferromagnetic [Co/Pd] multilayers. The results show an instantaneous and significantly stronger demagnetization below the Fermi level, while the demagnetization above the Fermi level is delayed by 35 +/- 10 fs. This provides a direct visualization of the process of ultrafast demagnetization involving spin-flip scattering of laser-excited holes and subsequent formation of spin waves.

The soft X-ray monochromator at the SASE3 beamline of the European XFEL: from design to operation

N. Gerasimova et al.

Summary: This article presents the design and performance of the SASE3 grating monochromator at the European XFEL's SASE3 soft X-ray beamline. The monochromator is designed to control both photon energy and temporal resolution, which is demanding due to the unique capability of a free-electron laser source. The current realization of the SASE3 monochromator is discussed, including the use of two gratings with different resolving powers for different experimental needs.

Time-Resolved XUV Absorption Spectroscopy and Magnetic Circular Dichroism at the Ni M2,3-Edges

Marcel Hennes et al.

Summary: This study utilized an X-ray streaking technique to investigate changes in electrons and spins in magnetic thin films. The results showed that the absorption and magnetic circular dichroism dynamics are dependent on the probing wavelength, with indications of more complex changes that require further research.

Carrier-specific dynamics in 2H-MoTe2 observed by femtosecond soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy using an x-ray free-electron laser

Alexander Britz et al.

Summary: Femtosecond carrier dynamics in layered 2H-MoTe2 semiconductor crystals were studied using soft x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy at XFEL. The distribution of photoexcited holes and electrons was directly probed, with observations of hot electron relaxation and electron-hole recombination on a 1-2 ps timescale. This work serves as a benchmark for applications of XFELs in studying carrier-specific dynamics in semiconductors.

The MiniSDD-Based 1-Mpixel Camera of the DSSC Project for the European XFEL

Matteo Porro et al.

Summary: The first DSSC 1-Mpixel camera was made available at the European XFEL in February 2019, optimized for photon science applications. It features direct conversion Si sensors with 1024x1024 pixel resolution and a peak frame rate of 4.5 MHz to cope with the demanding X-ray pulse time structure. The camera is equipped with miniaturized silicon drift detector (MiniSDD) pixel arrays and achieves noise values of about 60 electrons r.m.s. at the highest frame rate.

Effect of lattice excitations on transient near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy

N. Rothenbach et al.

Summary: In this study, time-dependent and constituent-specific spectral changes in soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of an [Fe/MgO](8) metal/insulator heterostructure after laser excitation were analyzed at the O K-edge with picosecond time resolution. It was found that the oxygen absorption edge of the insulator showed a uniform intensity decrease of the fine structure at elevated phononic temperatures. The sensitivity of transient near-edge XAS to phonons was demonstrated by combining XAS with ultrafast electron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations.

Shot noise limited soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy in solution at a SASE-FEL using a transmission grating beam splitter

Robin Y. Engel et al.

Summary: X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is an element-specific experimental method that is well-suited for studying 3d-metals and light elements like nitrogen. Recent developments in soft X-ray transmission spectroscopy on molecules in solution have provided valuable information on valence charge distributions of heteroatoms and metal centers. The use of split-beam referencing and streaking electron energy in Free-Electron Lasers (FELs) can enhance sensitivity and widen the spectral window for femtosecond XANES spectroscopy on liquids in the soft X-ray region, with the potential for significant improvements in instrument sensitivity.
