Effects of billet heating temperature and extrusion speed on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the longitudinal welds in aluminum alloy profiles with complex cross-section

Yuelin Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of billet heating temperature and extrusion speed on the microstructures and mechanical properties of longitudinal welds in aluminum alloy profiles were investigated. It was found that higher billet heating temperature resulted in smaller grain size, larger grain boundary misorientation angle, and higher density of dislocations. Extrusion speed had little effect on these properties. Poor welding quality was identified as the main cause for the low mechanical properties of the longitudinal welds. The longitudinal welds achieved the highest elongation and ultimate tensile strength at specific combinations of billet heating temperature and extrusion speed.
