Effects of COVID-19 pandemic period on neonatal mortality and morbidity

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on prenatal care, obstetric outcomes, neonatal mortality and morbidity. The results showed that pregnant women disrupted their regular antenatal care during the pandemic, leading to an increase in cases of small for gestational age and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborns.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on neonatal admissions in a tertiary children's hospital in southwest China: An interrupted time-series study

Summary: This study investigated the impact of lockdown measures during the COVID-19 pandemic on a pediatric hospital in China. The study found a significant decline in newborn admissions and admissions for various diseases during the pandemic. There was a particularly noticeable decrease in patients complaining about pathological jaundice-related conditions. The study also revealed that the health-seeking behavior of parents/caregivers was influenced by the pandemic.

Health service utilisation during the COVID-19 pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa in 2020: a multicountry empirical assessment with a focus on maternal, newborn and child health services

Summary: The quality of health facility reports in 2020 was high, with modest reductions in service utilisation observed in most countries. The greatest reductions were seen in inpatient and outpatient admissions. Eastern African countries had larger reductions compared to West African countries, and rural areas were slightly more affected than urban areas.

Danish premature birth rates during the COVID-19 lockdown

Summary: A nationwide study in Denmark examined the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on premature birth rates and found a significantly lower rate of extremely premature births during the lockdown period. There was no significant difference in other gestational age categories. The reasons for this decrease are still unclear, but the lockdown period offers a unique opportunity to investigate factors related to prematurity.

Trends in intensive neonatal care during the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan

Summary: A reduction in the use of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and the number of preterm births was observed during the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan, according to a study analyzing a large-scale inpatient database. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

Lack of changes in preterm delivery and stillbirths during COVID-19 lockdown in a European region

Summary: Prematurity and stillbirth rates remained stable in Castilla-y-Leon, a Spanish region, during the COVID-19 lockdown, with no direct link found between the lockdown measures and the rates. Further research on the role of behavioral patterns and sociocultural factors in preventing preterm birth through lockdown measures will be a focus of future studies.

Impact of the early COVID-19 pandemic on outcomes in a rural Ugandan neonatal unit: A retrospective cohort study

Summary: During the early COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda, travel restrictions impacted the demand for and access to care for pregnant women and newborns. A study in a rural Ugandan newborn unit found that during the pandemic, there was a decrease in admissions, older age on admission for patients born outside the facility, an increase in admissions with birth asphyxia, and higher mortality rates compared to before the pandemic. Patients born outside the facility had a higher relative increase in mortality during the pandemic. This was likely due to disruptions in maternal and newborn healthcare caused by lockdowns and transportation restrictions.

Pediatric Vaccination During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Vaccination uptake declined during the pandemic, with some recovery in younger children. Despite real-time monthly surveillance, declining trends in TB and HIV case detection and treatment outcomes were not fully addressed. Efforts are needed to translate this valuable information into actionable interventions.
