Historical Structure from Motion (HSfM): Automated processing of historical aerial photographs for long-term topographic change analysis

Friedrich Knuth et al.

Summary: Archives of historical aerial photographs can be used to augment long-term records of quantitative landscape change, but manual processing tasks hinder efficiency. We developed an automated method to generate high-resolution DEMs and orthoimages from historical images without manual GCP selection. Our method corrects camera position errors and produces accurate georeferenced products, regardless of camera configuration or terrain characteristics.

Using UAS-Aided Photogrammetry to Monitor and Quantify the Geomorphic Effects of Extreme Weather Events in Tectonically Active Mass Waste-Prone Areas: The Case of Medicane Ianos

Evelina Kotsi et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and photogrammetry to monitor and quantify geomorphic changes before and after extreme weather events. The combination of these tools allows for accurate delineation of instabilities, volumetric estimates of morphometric changes, and insights into erosion and deposition processes. This approach provides key insights into geomorphic processes that are otherwise difficult to observe and can contribute to risk management and sustainable development in high-risk areas.

iBluff: An open-source R package for geomorphic analysis of coastal bluffs/cliffs

Monica Palaseanu-Lovejoy

Summary: The iBluff package is a software designed for coastal bluffs/bluffs morphological analysis. It provides an automatic and reproducible method using a bare earth digital elevation model (DEM) to identify bluff edges instead of hand digitizing. The package extracts elevation profiles along automatically identified transects on various bluff features and can be extended to use three-dimensional (3D) point-cloud data.

Great lakes urban pocket-beach dynamics: A GIS-based analysis of infrastructure-design influences on geomorphic development

Christopher R. Mattheus et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geomorphic changes of Chicago's lakefront beaches during the rise in Lake Michigan's water level. The results show that the beach changes are closely related to the characteristics of the surrounding infrastructure, and the size of the beach is correlated with the overwash volume. The morphology of the beach is influenced by the rise in water level and the characteristics of the groins, with rotating shorelines exposed to the open lake and more enclosed beaches retreating uniformly along the coastline. The insights from this study provide useful information for managers to understand beach behavior and plan mitigation strategies for future lake-level oscillations.

Remote Sensing Application for Landslide Detection, Monitoring along Eastern Lake Michigan (Miami Park, MI)

Guzalay Sataer et al.

Summary: This study assessed the deformation patterns of the Miami Park bluffs on Lake Michigan's eastern margin and investigated the factors influencing this deformation. By analyzing satellite and UAV data, it was found that the bluffs experience high deformation rates, which are correlated with freeze-thaw cycles and lake level variations.

Geomorphometry and terrain analysis: data, methods, platforms and applications

Liyang Xiong et al.

Summary: Terrain is a crucial natural geographic feature that plays a significant role in physical processes. The fields of geomorphometry and terrain analysis have provided abundant topographic data and tools, which have contributed to the understanding of geomorphology, hydrology, soil science, and geographic information systems (GIS). Recent advancements in analysis theory, methods, data acquisition techniques, and analysis platforms have facilitated the interpretation of topographic characteristics and associated mechanisms and processes. Future directions include addressing challenges in data collection and construction, expanding the application of efficient analysis frameworks and tools, and integrating terrain analysis with other disciplines for cross-analysis purposes.

Geomorphological mapping and anthropogenic landform change in an urbanizing watershed using structure-from-motion photogrammetry and geospatial modeling techniques

Peter G. Chirico et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of using detailed geomorphologic maps to plan land in urban areas, and the application of geospatial modeling to quantify anthropogenic landform changes. Incorporating anthropogenic landforms into detailed geomorphologic maps can better manage land, identify hazards, and address challenges posed by urbanization.

Evaluation of structure-from-motion for analysis of small-scale glacier dynamics

Paulina Lewinska et al.

Summary: The study proposes a measurement procedure for marine-terminating glaciers and validates it using Hans Glacier as a case study. The research demonstrates the effectiveness of the method for documenting small-scale glacier dynamics and emphasizes the importance of proper alignment strategies for models with poorly distributed control points. The comparative analysis also finds that Bentley ContextCapture tool offers lower error rates, faster processing speed, and better reconstruction of fine details and shadowed concavities compared to Agisoft Metashape tool.

Structure-from-Motion-Derived Digital Surface Models from Historical Aerial Photographs: A New 3D Application for Coastal Dune Monitoring

Edoardo Grottoli et al.

Summary: Recent advances in structure-from-motion techniques have led to the widespread use of UAVs in monitoring coastal landform changes, with the best method resulting in an error value of 0.93 m. The application of modern SfM methodology to historical aerial photography analysis is a novel and reliable approach for quantifying coastal dune volume changes.

Foredune dynamics at a Lake Michigan site during rising and high lake levels

Deanna van Dijk

Summary: This study examines the dynamics of foredunes on the east coast of Lake Michigan and finds that the foredune activity under high lake levels mainly involves retreat and narrowing, contrary to predictions of certain models. The disappearance of the foredune leads to erosion on the next landward dune.

Effects of wind patterns and changing wind velocities on aeolian drift potential along the Lake Michigan shore

Brian Yurk et al.

Summary: The study calculated the aeolian sand drift potential along the Lake Michigan shore and surrounding region using wind data from meteorological stations, finding correlations between the positions of cyclones and anticyclones and the orientation of the shores. The research also showed a decrease in regional drift potential since 1948, with a 40% decrease in drift potential from 1961 to 2019. The weakening ability of winds along Lake Michigan shores to transport sand is expected to contribute to the stabilization of coastal dunes.

Aeolian creep transport: A review

Pei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews studies on aeolian creep and discusses the dynamics, measurement methods, and relative contribution of creep transport. The findings show discrepancies between different studies and indicate no significant relationship between the proportion of sand flux moved as creep and the magnitude of wind forcing. Further research on the role of creep in wind-blown sand systems is deemed important.

It suggests that the evolution of sandy coasts in the future depends on a range of factors and calls for comprehensive consideration.

Thaw-driven mass wasting couples slopes with downstream systems, and effects propagate through Arctic drainage networks

Steven Kokelj et al.

Summary: The intensification of thaw-driven mass wasting is transforming glacially conditioned permafrost terrain, coupling slopes with aquatic systems, and triggering a cascade of downstream effects. Research quantifies the enlargement of retrogressive thaw slumps and describes the coupling processes between slopes and downstream systems, investigates catchment-scale patterns of slope thermokarst impacts, and maps the propagation of effects through hydrological networks. The study reveals a significant increase in catchment-scale geomorphic activity and the coupling of slope and hydrological systems, with downstream effects impacting streams, coastlines, and lakes in northwest Canada.
