The new WHO air quality guidelines for PM2.5: predicament for small/medium cities

Gabriela Polezer et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the global importance of air pollution on human health and emphasizes that only a limited number of small- and middle-sized cities have air quality monitoring networks. The study investigates the bioaccessibility of potentially harmful elements in a specific city and evaluates their health risks. The results show that there is a considerable health risk even when the daily average concentration of PM2.5 is below the WHO guideline. Additionally, the mobility of these elements differs from previous studies in large-sized cities. This research suggests that addressing the global health challenge of air pollution requires considering the chemical composition of particulate matter, in addition to mass concentration levels.

Measuring air pollution from the 2021 Canary Islands volcanic eruption

Mikalai Filonchyk et al.

Summary: This research examines the impact of the Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption on regional and local air quality using open-source data. The study focuses on emissions of volcanic material and the spread of aerosols in the atmosphere. The findings can help in forecasting air pollution and associated health risks resulting from large-scale volcanic eruptions.

Beyond megacities: tracking air pollution from urban areas and biomass burning in Brazil

Rafaela Squizzato et al.

Summary: The majority of the global population lives in rural areas or small to medium-sized cities, all of which are affected by distant air pollution sources. In urban centres in Brazil, primary pollutant emissions have decreased due to government actions, but surface ozone levels have increased, especially in areas impacted by biofuels production. The metropolitan area of Sao Paulo (MASP) is the main source of O-3, accounting for up to 80% of O-3 concentrations in communities over 200km away.

Global Warming, Climate Change, and Environmental Pollution: Recipe for a Multifactorial Stress Combination Disaster

Sara Zandalinas et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that an increase in different co-occurring multifactorial stress factors can result in a severe decline in plant growth and survival, as well as a decrease in microbiome biodiversity. This should serve as a warning for society to take action to reduce pollutants, combat global warming, and increase crop tolerance to multifactorial stress combinations.

Impact of exposure to smoke from biomass burning in the Amazon rain forest on human health

Marilyn Urrutia-Pereira et al.

Summary: The review study found that there is limited research on the negative health effects of exposure to smoke from biomass burning in the Amazon region. Effective public health interventions are urgently needed to improve the behavior of vulnerable populations exposed to such smoke and reduce morbidity and mortality associated with the exposure.

Concluding remarks: Faraday Discussion on air quality in megacities

Masao Gen et al.

Summary: Megacities are facing significant global environmental challenges, with air pollution being a major issue. While substantial progress has been made in emissions reduction technologies and control measures, further research is needed on atmospheric transport and reaction mechanisms, secondary particle formation and evolution, and the influence of emerging emissions sources and changing climate on air quality and health.

Ambient air pollution in selected small cities in India: Observed trends and future challenges

Girish Agrawal et al.

Summary: Exposure to ambient air pollution is a major threat to human health in most Indian cities, with limited monitoring and data collection. This paper presents particulate air pollution trends monitored over one year in three small cities in India, providing important insights for policy-making to address air pollution issues.
